That's probably a better idea. Also, one thing that helps is changing the way full auto recoil works in the game. SR designers believe (erroneously) that the longer you hold down the trigger, the more inaccurate your fire becomes. IRL, that's just not true. In my experience, full-auto fire very quickly hits a plateau, or a rhythm, if you will. Once you have fired 3-5 rounds in full auto, and continue to hold down the trigger, the weapon will fall into a sort of cadence, and will normally be quite controllable. The key about automatic fire is it's uses. At relatively close range, it is fairly easy to put a lot of bullets into a man-sized target with autofire. However, as your target moves further and further away, it becomes increasingly difficult to put all of your shots on target. However, putting a lot of bullets in the air in this manner can actually INCREASE your chance to hit your target with at least one round. SR4 tries to model that with Wide and Narrow bursts, but I don't really care for the mechanics. |

To figure in the range thing, you could always multiply the recoil penalty by the range increment -1... half penalty at close range, normal at medium, double at long, three times at extreme. Or you could get rid of the -1 if you want, shorten up that effective range a bit.
I used to use a houserule where gunfire at "point blank" (basically, close combat ranges but not involved in close combat, like when a character stuck his submachinegun in the window of a car and unloaded on the driver) experienced only half of the recoil penalty. Seemed to work okay, and upped the popularity of machine pistols. |
