The corporations need the Government to stay out of their business, otherwise they could never get away with all the things they do. Free Trade is Fair Trade.
Capitalism is all about profit. Corporations are all about profit. They work together, trust me. |

Capitalism is about perfect competition. Name me a mega that wants perfect competition.
The corporations thrive on neo-feudalism, where the people at the bottom work for the good of the corporation and the people at the top work for the good of themselves. ~J |

No, the idea of Capitalism is about perfect competition, but thats not how it works in practice, does it? Its about making the most profit; cheapest labor, cheapest materials, cheapest wages all so that they make the maximized profit on every product sold. And with all the cheapest production comes competition; the cheaper you can make your products, the cheaper you can sell them. Competition is secondary. Exploitation and Imperialism are key.

the fact that the ideal which forms the basis of capitalism is difficult to achieve, and rarely if ever realized, does not make it any less the basis of capitalism. socialism in the USSR failed--that doesn't make it not socialism. but it does mean that socialism is gone. in SR, capitalism failed, and now it's gone, replaced with low-intensity global warfare.

Cuba's an interesting place for something like this in Shadowrun. The leader of Cuba (in SR) is a Communist in name only, and there are Communist groups who are against him. He's really a blatant opportunist looking to be both a populist and a corporate whore and would make a good target in a campaign where the runners were idealist revolutionaries.
Plus, his military leader is an ex-Azzie with skeletons in his closet and there's no love lost between Cuba, Aztlan, and the CAS. |

But thats my point; the basis of Capitalism is not competition, thats the outcome of how capitalism works. Profit, free market, privatly owned means of production and distribution. Thats still very prominent in Shadowrun. |

No. Unchecked capitalism does not lead to competition or a free market. Unchecked Capitalism will always lead to an economic oligarchy, because the formation of monopolistic trusts is the best and most efficient way for businesses to profit. The Trust can effectively set the price of their goods at the maximum that people are able to pay without worrying about competition. They can use oppressive contracts to make t impossible for upstart companies to get the materials and resources that they need to compete and they can sell well below cost in order to crush any upstarts that do get up and running. There is no true capitalist society in the world today. There are only Capitalist-socialists of one variety or another. Governments promote competition by threatening to use violence against those businesses that become too large or too powerful. Anti-trust laws, anti-monopoly laws, and other such things promote competition. If the government couldn't or wouldn't point guns of the heads of CEOs, there would be no competition. |
