QUOTE (Casazil)
Maybe your right but then again I'd have to read the books to know and sorry I never have just don't have time.

They are only short stories... Minority Report, Paycheck, and Total Recall were all short stories, not a big dedication to read. Take you longer to go to B&N and find it on the shelf then read it. :P

Bladerunner and A Scanner Darkly were based on novels...

Sorry to pull the thread out of the rails for a moment, but will be a fast one and we get back to topic. What you say about Scanner Darkly? I didn't saw the movie or read the book, but i'm about buying the DVD... it's worth?

Ah, damn, I haven't seen it yet so I can't really comment. Figures you'd ask about that one.... :D

I did enjoy the book. I have a hard time relating to the hardcore addict mentality, so the characters always felt a little distant. Other than that I enjoyed the novel, I just haven't gotten around to the movie yet. It only had like 2 weeks run here in Fresno, CA. I wanted to see it in the Theater but because of the short run I missed it.

I saw the movie didn't read the book thought the movie was ok liked some of the concepts but I guess that hardcore addict mentality was lost on me just like Demerzel.

But I had no problem following the story and was entertained.

Any one of the old or new novels are like ten times better than any of the sci-fi movies they come up with.

You faith in Hollywood is unfounded... Even with great source material they can bungle it, take the attempts to turn Phil Dick stories into movies. Minority Report and Paycheck as examples.

QUOTE (Abbandon)
Shadowrun is more about expressing your feelings and lifting some guys security card without him noticing.

Somehow that made me think of the Stripper Nurse in Ocean's 11...

Hi,

I agree that HollyWood is really crap at putting out good SciFi, but Firefly was only made because of a loyal fanbase [supposedly, anyway]..
..And was voted best film of 2006 in the UK.

In real terms, it wouldn't be too far a stretch for someone to put together a Mission Impossible-type movie and SR-ise it..
..Done right, it might not be very SR, but it'd enough to prove the concept and the offshoot products/merchandising would be easy to sell - Apart from the RPG stuff [which would be almost unmentioned], there'd be figures, novels, t-shirts with corp logos/Amerindian motifs/etc, and so forth.

It wouldn't have to be named Shadowrun, but if it was Cyber-ish and had Seattle, AmerIndians, Corps, maybe some 'strange powers' or a 'psychic', some weird animals, a bit of Dystopia..
..We'd recognise it, and it's roots.

But in general, that's the biggest problem - stereotyping a film/book and cutting out most of the potential audience..
..Are Minority Report and BladeRunner SciFi movies or detective films ??

Do a film as an action movie, throw in some non-standard things, and you could probably get away with it..
..But which film company is going to take the risk ?? Which director is going to be passionate enough about it ?? Who is going to take the time to put it all together, to do it the way it should be ??

Just my thruppence..

I think the closest thing I am watching that is Shadowrun like is Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex on Cartoon Network. Ergo Proxy on FUSE is pretty Shadowrun like as well.

The closest American show right now would probably be Painkiller Jane. And that show could be a lot better. Before that, maybe Dark Angel.

Going back to the topic. I didn't realize that Shadowrun was more popular. I didn't even realize it was going on it's fourth printing. When I go to GEN CON, I see a lot of people by the Battletech stuff.

Is Shadowrun more popular abroad then in the US? And when am I going to get a translated copy of the German sourcebook? I asked at the last GEN CON, and there were no plans for releasing a translated version.

Here in Germany SR has been a topseller for a long time.
While the undisputed market leader is Das Schwarze Auge (a fantasy game translated by Fanpro LLC as "The Dark Eye") a number of games have rotated between the top positions in yearly gamer polls. The usual suspects: SR, D&D, World of Darkness (especially Vampire), Call of Cthulhu.
(You read that right - in Germany SR is considered an equal of D&D!)

Which one? There's a lot of German SR stuff that has never been released in English.
For SR4 alone there are two additional books - the location sourcebooks for Munich and the SOX (that one is also available in French). Plus, our translation of Runner Havens has an enlarged Hamburg chapter...

But with the current licensing trouble* nobody knows who's going to publish German SR in the future or when the next translated release is to be expected...

* FanPro Germany has disbanded its RPG branch and is transforming into a pure novel publishing house. The German SR license is currently vacant with several companies interested but with the ongoing Wizkids/IMR license negotiations talks about the German license have stalled.

Most likely: Never.

Licencing issues aside, the additional material is so country-specific (and sometimes just plain silly...) even a good share of german gamers doesn't use it.
The major exception would be 'Shockwaves', but even this german adventure about Proteus only had it's info part translated and distributed for free on srrpg.com
