I know one female gamer who left to her own devices will always play a Dwarf Rigger drug addict/dealer. Always. Sure, I know another who wants to ride around on or be a pretty unicorn in every single game (seriously), but I don't think it's really coherent to say that women in general want anything in particular from Shadowrun.
I know one man who absolutely refuses to be s factionless criminal working professionally for the highest bidder. He damnds that the enemies he faces off against be villainous and that his own actions be heroic in return. I know another man whose characters will, left to their own devices, eat humans - and needless to say I keep these players in different campaigns. And that's important. different players, male or female, want different stuff out of a campaign. Something I seriously do with all beginning games is to ask each player to nominate three cities that they would like to make characters in and run out of, and then talk about what they want to do in each city. Then I get the players to talk to each other about what it is that they want to do and to find some common ground that they can agree on. Sometimes this means that the PCs end up being Sun Warriors in Tenochitlan solving X Files for the Aztlan government. Sometimes this ends up with the players fronting Australian Anarchists who travel around the Indian Ocean trying to bring down The Man. Sometimes this ends up with the players being low-rent trouble shooters in London - whatever. Once all the players can agree on a shared vision, then you can get players to start taking some interest. Saying "You're all punk criminals for hire in Seattle" may or may not work for any particular player. -Frank |

Man, now I want to have a pretty girl riding a pretty unicorn who's being menaced by a drug dealer. The heroic guy could swoop in to save her, and the fourth guy could eat him. And then the unicorn, just to be safe.

Thanks for all those replies, it took me quite some time to read everything.
For some part, it seems i have failed to explain my point, but i also realise that i have more options at my disposal that i first thought. Anyway, the debate is realy interesting, i'll keep you informed when i'll run my "all ladies" game in a couple weeks. Thanks again, Treehugger |

Make your point then! Then we can go through it again. It will be like a new thread on a similar subject.

The sample size is quite large. Just type "yaoi" into google's searchbox and you'll find millions of such women, though this may be a slightly biased method. But it isn't incorrect to state that the Yaoi genre is, with a few exceptions, almost exclusively written for women by women.
I think that it is much more fun to test their maternal instincts and introduce the Invae at the same time, with Missing Blood. "You're the cutest little abomination, yes you are." |

Some interesting insights here, I'll definately try and incorporate some of these next time I'm running a SR game with female players.

One thing you might want to try. Read some of the novels. I haven't read the more recent ones. But back in the day the novels tended to get epic pretty fast.
Note that this isn't because the characters were particularily epic! Characters like Dirk Montgomery and Kham (actually a lot of them, a whole lot of them now that I think about it) would come in at 400BP or less I think. It's just that a core concept of the old shadowrun was the "gears within gears" thing. So people would quickly get more and more caught up in deep plots and pretty soon you're saving the planet or talking with a dragon, Damien knight, Deuce or whatever. And the characters tended to have flavor. I'd suggest trying to capture a bit of that. One of my favorite things about Shadowrun is it's depth. In other games often you could summarize the whole plot of what's going on in a short paragraph. In SR it can take pages just to explain the people involved and their motivations, and more to explain the backstory (a lot of which is provided for you). So go have some fun with the elves or the other movers and shakers of the SR world. And for goodness sakes change up the fashions! Even the corpers are making it interesting! Give page 46 a read and then take it to heart. The corpers you're trying to blend in with are among the fashion forward crowed (especially the females). |

just be aware that females are tricky and not to be trusted. they may, if you're not careful, use wiles on you.

And of course by "wiles" you simply mean b00bs right MFB? :D :D Seriously though, sit down with the girls of your group before a session (hell have the rest of the guys sit in for idea bouncing) and hear what they'd specifically want to pull into the the "SR Universe" to make it more "fun" for them. You might get some overlapping ideas, or at least some give-and-take from both sides for a *gasp* compromise with out sacrificing the "SR Feel" or whatever that you have already. We can spout out all the conjecture and pull random ideas out of our asses to appease you and your situation but unless you ask your players what THEY want, you'll be posting to this thread over and over again. Once you know what specific problems they have come back and address it with us again and I'm certain people will be more than willing to pipe in and give their opinions... p.s. as a chick I like the backstories, the "downtime" of my characters as much (if not more so) than the actual runs themselves. I think Talia Invierno gave you a great example or at least a way to make it exciting in the previous posts for all players and more "appealing" to the women of your group. If nothing else, let the "epic" aspect of the stories build from there as opposed from the actual runs themselves. |

<Sweating profusely Lazarus fights not to type a sexist comment. A little devil looking like Larry Flint pops up on his left shoulder.> LFD: Come on do it! Type the Predator reference. If it bleeds- <A little angel looking like Tipper Gore pops up on his right shoulder.> TGA: Shame on you Lazarus! Have you been listening to that awful Twisted Sister? Lazarus: No Ma'am Cannibal Corpse. LFD: Oh Stripped, Raped, and Strangled rules! Let's put on I Cum Blood. Lazarus: Dude not now. TGA: (Shocked Outrage) My word! No wonder you're having these nasty thoughts. You go and read Ariel Levy or Jessica Valenti right this minute! LFD: They're both pretty hot! Hey so are you baby. LFD saunters over to TGA and starts massaging her shoulders. LFD: You seem tense baby. Why don't you let the Flint man stoke your love furnace. Lazarus: (Sour Look) Dude that sucked. LFD: F**k you punk! You can’t even type a slightly sexist joke on a blog where no one knows you in real f**king life without making some stupid ass skit about it. Which sucks a ** BTW! And stop using those stupid stars when type curse words. Have some balls man! Everyone knows what’re typing for f**k’s sake! See you did it again! God you suck! TGA: Speaking of sucking. LFD: Yeah baby. LFD & TGA have a furious make session on top of Lazarus's computer desk. Disgusted and defeated Lazarus ends the post |
