Like computers today, anyone can buy any type of off-the-shelf commlink.

hm, so the only way to get anything better than (roughly) 3/4 i think it was, is to build it yourself?

availability for hardware upgrades are found on page 240.

availability for software is on page 228.

the commlinks themselves have no availability rating (that is, they are perfectly legal items that are easily obtainable). likewise for the stock operating systems.

that depends on how you interpret things.

there are those who insist that you must upgrade an existing commlink. i'm not sure where they pull this from, exactly, that's just what they've decided.

there's nothing that says you can't just buy a response, firewall, system, and firewall all at rating 6 and stick them all together to make a commlink. certainly, it might not have all the extras of the off-the-shelf commlinks (which, iirc, includes a camera, and has the advantage of looking inconspicuous)

Yeah this is true as you buy the comm stuff at the level you want it at you don't need to buy each level to go to the next one.

All my characters have bought the cheap one and then did the upgrade so all stats are 6's and 5's the price works out to 11,050

While you do need a case/power supply camera/fibre hookups and all that I'd probably just toss that in with the cost of the other items. The reason to get a different comlink and gut it is so that it looks like you've got a commonly availible comlink to any passers by.

and another non avail. related commlink question, if i do it implanted 2000+ commlink 1+ upgrade, or 2000+commlink 1+ 2000 (for whatever re-surgery is needed)+ upgrades, ya think?

If you upgrade it after it's inside you'll have to pay for the surgery.

Well personally I usually assume that when you custom order a commlink you still get all of the gizmos, and that there are enough custom cases floating around that you don't ahve to worry about buying an off the self commlink in order to avoid getting odd looks. (Plus I figure that you've got to be able to order a replacement case without the guts in case yours gets cracked or something.)

As for implanted commlinks, well personally I assume that they are implanted in such a way that you don't need actual surgery everytime something goes wrong with it, but that's just me.

My assumption is that the reason for implantation, at least in most runners, is concealability, which means it would be harder to access.

Implanted cost the same as what you pay for the commlink + the 2,000.

Like wise you buy a alpha grade internal commlink it is 4,000 and yes you double the commlinks cost as well.

In this case commlink is 11,050 + 2,000
Alpha is 22,100 + 4,000
Beta is 44,200 + 8,000
Delta is 110,500 + 20,000

Any other questions?

That's not necessarily the case. Plenty of people could have implanted commlinks, just so they never have to worry about losing them. Also, a concealed commlink doesn't need to be any harder to access than a standard implanted one; it could just have a better synthskin flap covering it. Finally, there aren't any rules for concealing cyberware, short of going alpha or better. If you want a concealed implanted commlink, you represent that by buying a higher grade of implant.

Are you positive of this? I assumed it was 2000 for the commlink-head-port, which scaled essence and cost for various grades, but that you didn't get a delta grade commlink.
In other words, I don't think the cost of the link changes with grade. Can we get book/errata/FAQ quotes one way or the other?

Although it isn't quite the same, you do need to buy whatever equipment you're planning on shoving into a cyberarm at the same grade as the arm, so in theory you could have a deta-grade stat uplink so I think it fits.

I agree that that's true for cyberarm accessories, but not necessarily for everything.
If I want to put a tuna fish sandwich into a delta grade smuggling compartent in a delta grade arm, I do not need a delta grade sandwich.
I am saying that the internal comlink is more like this. You get a commlink port installed in your head, and you connect whatever you want to it.

But just to be clear, I'm not insisting that I'm correct or that you're wrong (and I'm not implying that you are either), it was just the way I saw it and I'm hoping to get it cleared up.

According to Rob Boyle this is the way it is I asked in an e-mail once.
