Hi,

I'm co-GM with a couple of other guys and we have a disagreement on the cost of programs. I think you pay for the rating up to rating 3 and then add the cost for for rating 4, 5, and 6. One of the other GM thinks you should pay at the higher cost for rating 4 and above. So for a Hacking program could cost two different ways.

Stealth (rating 4): (3 * 500) nuyen + (1*1000) nuyen = 2,500 nuyen
or
Stealth (rating 4): 4 * 1000 nuyen = 4000 nuyen

Any thoughts on which is correct?

Thanks!

It's the latter. :) You don't buy programs in partial upgrades, it's an all-or-nothing investment. You either have a Rating 4 program or you don't. This is practically a "universal truth" for everything in the gear.

If you're upgrading, you simulate that by only paying the difference between the two. So going from a Rating 3 program of that type to a Rating 4 would cost you 2,500¥ (4,000¥ for the Rating 4 minus the 1,500¥ for the Rating 3). In the end, it still cost you 4,000¥. And, actually, I don't know if upgrading applies to software like this since they'd be two completely different programs. If that's the case, then it'd still be 4,000¥ for the Rating 4 while you'd also have the Rating 3 for the 1,500¥ you originally paid.

Oh, I'm much more evil. I don't allow them to pay the difference when upgrading programs, they have to pay the whole new cost.

The store will not let you "return" opened software!

I'd probably let them pay the difference for rating 1-32 or 4-5, but not if they're making the jump. It seems to me that if you're in the same "grade" for software it's possible to get lite versions and full versions of the same programs.

They could sell the old rating 3 to someone else, and use the proceeds to buy the rating 6... or the seller of the rating 6 could take the rating 3 program in trade and resell it...

Since that can happen, I don't have a big problem letting players simply pay the difference... :)

Even Microsoft gives you a discount for upgrades. :(

Microsoft would hardly qualify for rating A corp in shadowrun by its size. Its not even extraterritorial. You think bigger corps would play nicer?

I'm sure that Microsoft would be an A corp if it wasn't for that "company being destroyed by a volcano" thing.

Speaking of which who is the Microsoft of SR4? The company that writes the software that most people use in business and at home or has the market fragmented a bit more?

it's a bit more fragmented, but i think renraku, MCT, and evo are pretty big.

the thing is, the really big corps you can't really point and say "this is what they do", and that especially applies to AAA, because you don't get to AAA status by doing just one thing.

for example, you can say that Aztechnology is big in biotech stuff and they supply a lot of the world's food.

they also happen to be a leader in cyberzombies. and blood magic/magic in general. as i recall, they also own the stuffer shack chain. but that's just the tip of the iceberg. they own companies that make almost any product you could imagine.

so you can sorta point and say "corp X is a big player in this area" but you have to understand that when it comes to the AAA corps, they're involved in almost every area.... and in many cases, the market is much more fragmented. even the areas the AAAs specialise in aren't without competition... Aztechnology is a biotech giant, but Universal Omnitech is also a biotech giant. MCT, renraku, and evo may be big computer companies, but the only reason transys neuronet isn't still it's own independant company doing a lot of the same stuff is because they merged with novatech to become evo (and didn't just get absorbed or anything like, they're actually as much in control as novatech is)

so yeah, i'd say the market is a lot more fragmented.

One nitpick ...

Transys and Novatech merged into NeoNet, while Evo is the rejuvenation of Yamatetsu. ;)

In the free software world, upgrades are far more common than complete package replacement, even when crossing a development plateau. Frequently you can just do the equivalent of going from rating 3 to rating 6. Of course, just as often you can't.

Casting raise dead thread
So, is their an "official rule" on the subject or is open to each GM?

It's exactly as the book says. A rating 4 program costs rating x 1000 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nuyen.gif) , and there are no specific rules regarding upgrading software, so you must buy a new version (and you keep both or sell the old one or whatever). You're free to rule either of those differently as GM, however.

It's NeoNET, not NeoNet. The 'NET' stands for Novatech, Erikson, and Transys.
