it occurs to me that i've probably had larger mod action taken against me than any other user. at least, i'm pretty sure that no other user has provoked the banning of an entire country's IP range (or at least a big part of it).

I remember a thread a few months ago. It was in general gaming. We were talking about this other game and was warned to take it to the section where is specificly designed for that. The guy who started the thread was too lazy and never did. Eventually it just go shut down.

I'm still reasonably new here. No warnings or bans yet, not that I am expecting any. Then again, I also heavily moderate what I post so I'm not breaking any rules.

Such is life.

I've never been warned on any forum, but a weird thing just happened to me a couple of weeks ago: I got banned from rpol.net for having more than one account.

I didn't know what rpol.net was when I first went there, so I created a dummy account with a random name so I could search the games, etc. Then later, I deleted the email for the first account and created a "real" account for rpol.net. I went on vacation, then came back to several notices that I better reply right now or my accounts will be disabled and finally a notice that I was banned.

I tried to get my accounts deleted so I could make one with a decent name, but the Nazi running the place wouldn't do it. She said I had to keep my original account name forever. The site looks like it's a hundred years old, so it's probably running on some ancient rickety SQLAnywhere database, so maybe she's just afraid of touching the thing.

I had requested to join all the SR4 games there, but I only got one reply and that game ended up getting abandoned by the GM after a week with no notice, so I haven't bothered to get my account fixed.

I seem to remember getting a stern warning once, but that was what feels like eons ago, I think it may have been on the Jive forums.
No bans, yet at least. I tend to let people like Tisoz and mfb get the ban hammer before I get into real trouble.

And mfb, I have to ask, how did you get an entire country IP banned? I mean that takes either some massive talent, or a lazy moderator.

while i was serving in Korea, i got banned while logged on from my room a few hours south of Seoul. over that weekend (i think?) i went up to Seoul and, among other things, i made a new account so i could keep arguing. that got banned, along with (as best i can tell) all IPs from the Korean range. i couldn't even view threads from Seoul, my room on base, or a third location i checked from.

like i said, i was somewhat less mellow back then...

*points and laughs* ha-ha!

The database is actually very well managed and they just released the new version of rpol like 4 months ago. The lady (cruinne?) was probably rough with you because she has to deal with a lot of very abusive people who demand a right to have a second account on a site they don't own and don't pay for. But you can enjoy your sour grapes ;P

Actually, they do—they pay in content (and, if the site is ad-supported, eyeballs). Not saying that there's necessarily entitlement there, but a forum or other user-contribution-oriented site without users is as much nothing as if the server weren't there to begin with.

The last reprimand/warning I can remember I got from a wet-behind-the-ears mod (in a different forum) who couldn't detect sarcasm from a scathing attack.

I banned him for a day. You don't mess with the secret admins, a perk I got from dating the forum admin :D

The only advertising was a link to amazon.com which was added a month or two ago (grudgingly, because they don't get enough donations).

I don't think adding content is 'paying' for something in this case, espegcially if you're not providing content with any value. For instance, if there is a serious want of GMs, one could consider running a game adding value to the site because you provide something the site needs (GMs). But firstly, the fellow indicated he looks to play in games in a field already awash in players (and therefore he reduces value of the site by reducing available game slots) and secondly the site admin has said that he made the site basically for himself and his friends, but has opened it up to other people because he's nice. So my offering a Shadowrun game when the admin and his friends don't play Shadowrun doesn't offer value to the owner, it only costs him bandwidth.

The owner doesn't seem to agree, as your game isn't shut down.

Whatever you say. Tell your girlfriend to stop chasing off customers or she'll find that you really do need visitors to the site or ads stop paying. You might want to tell her to take a basic business course. And while your at it, you might want to tell her to get some lessons in manners too. Maybe she'll find people aren't so "abusive" to her if she isn't so abusive to them first. Of course if she hangs out with people like you, I guess I can see how she's encouraged to act like that. :D

Like I said, he's nice. He regularly posts the costs of the site. It generally costs him hundreds or thousands of dollars over the course of the year to maintain. He does it out of charity. Considering he is paying for my games, I don't begrudge him whatever rules he wanted. If he took a business course, he'd probably cover the site with banners or pop-ups or shut down :P I'd much rather leave them running a charity organization, even if it's one that is a little nasty towards people who don't read the rules.

I and about oh...20 or 30 of my bestest friends got banned, ejected, and deleted by Dvixen's flaming IP banhammer of doom a long, long time ago?

...Good lord, that was like 8 years ago. Now I feel old. Oh and we probably unequivocally deserved every bit of it :)

Personally I've been banned and/or black listed from many sites and mailing lists. Because I am a raging and uncompromising asshole.

I was banned from the L5R rules discussion lists because I pointed out a flaw in the rules and proposed a fix (which was ultimately adopted).

I was banned from WotC's D&D board because people had begun quoting me back and forth with Skip Williams in arguments about how rules interacted.

I left the Nifty Boards and vowed never to return because one of the mods was a neo-Nazi and after a very large flame war where we both broke just about every rule the site ever had the mods agreed to... not do anything to either of us. So I told them that they should probably enforce their own rules and left.

I got warned on ENWorld because I said that Gygax was a plagarist and poor model to base gaming upon.

And I've gotten temporary bans here oh... a couple of times. Mostly for being a dick.

...wow, that's some laundry list there.

I think the last time I was on the WotC D&D board was when it still was 3rd ed & Sword & Fist came out. Though I did receive a Happy Christmas email from them the other day.

I just generally can't spare the energy to get worked up enough to go crazy enough to get warned and whatnot. Though I must say my random thought processes have derailed the living hell out of quite a few threads.

I don't think I've ever been warned or anything though. If I have it didn't make enough of an impression for me to remember. I'm generally enough of a self-entitled, conceited, self-righteous ass that if I was warned.... I would probably ignore it or talk back unless I really felt I was doing something wrong.

I'm a dick. Hey, Frank, we should form a club or something.

Then I seriously doubt your badassitude.

Challenging mods after a warning just jacks up the amount of force with which they will drop the hammer on you. I've never run into anyone online who truly is a "self-entitled, conceited, self-righteous ass" and acts like one without some stain on their reputation for getting in trouble with mods and admins.
