Hey all, I have a quick question and I figured this is the place to ask it. What does NERPS stand for?
p.s. Any additional paydata on NERPS would be welcome. Thank you in advance. Sincerely, Crash2029 |

I was told by some FASA person at Gen Con '90 that it stood for "Non-Essential Role-Playing Stuff." I've heard some other backronyms, though, and mine's no more or less authentic than anybody else's.

Actually The London sourcebook is more NERPS than actual useful material. And I REALLY miss the panache that it had. It had full color photograpic adds for fictional bars/buisnesses/organizations.

on the serious side of things, this also bothered me for the longest time, and after searching through every rule/sourcebook and adventure i could get my hands on, i finally found a small section in the SRcomp for third ed (i don't know if it is in the previous version, i don't have that one).
in the SRcomp, under SOTA advances, an advancement in NERPS is an advancement in popular culture, such as a new album being released or a set of moving sidewalks being installed like say, at the local airport. given that, and the acronym of Non-Essencial Role-Playing Stuff, i would have to go with this one. Edit: not meaning that i think what i found is true and not what was compaired to, i meant that Non-Essential Role-Playing Stuff perfictally describes the book text, and is probably the closest we will ever get to a true defination. (suddenly got wracked with a feeling of eilitism re-reading his post) Honestly it was almost as hard as trying to find the availability and price on a magemask, but only almost ("Neo anarchist's guide to North America" for those interested). Got NERPS? |

In games I used to run, I'd have ridiculous NERPS advertisements pop up as foreshadowing for important events in the story. Further, I'd try to keep all the NERPS slogans to a certain theme each adventure, which would make sense with the way ad campaigns work (or at least the way I imagine they work, given that I'm not an advertising professional). I should maybe start doing that again, but I'm not sure the newer players would get it, and it might kill it if I had to explain what NERPS are (or aren't).
