I have an adept character im working on a background for. I'm curious if profesional spots like football or baseball in the Shadowrun future allow or prohibit adepts or those who have cyber / bio modification.
I kinda thought it would be cool to have an throwing adept who since he was a litle kid praticed to be a kick ass pithcer or QB and then got turned down by the big leagues becasue he turned out to be an adept. |

Most of the 'big leagues' allow cyber (although most of what is allowed is regulated heavily), but very few actually allow awakened individuals. The situation you describe is quite viable as a concept.

...according to Shadowbeat which is still a good source, Adepts powers were pretty much considered cheats. however in 2045 a landmark decision was handed down by the major sports commissioners that allowed adepts to participate provided they did not benefit from any implanted enhancements. Under this ruling, if an adept went out and had ware implanted, he would lose his status & be cut. Of course the final decision was left to the front office for each team.
Now for for going the Augmented way In baseball you are allowed up to 3 points of essence in Cyber. Of course for 4th ed I would imagine that would also include bio as well. For football the NFL basically has no limit except that weapon implants are prohibited. Like baseball, basketball is hesitant to embrace the use of cyber/bio. FUll limb replacement or any modification to the height of the player are illegal as are weapon implants. Since Shadowbeat came out in SR1, there has been a lot of new ware introduced that would not be covered (like Raptor/Kid Stealth Legs, eye laser designators tied to "smartball" technology, etc.). This would be a GM decision. |

Can you give me a quote for this? Especially where it applies to all (or even most ... or maybe even just some) professional sports. |

Unfortunately I can only give a page reference. Shadowbeat p 62
For some odd reason when I attempt to paste the block of text copied from the PDF, all formatting goes to heck and it puts each word on a separate line. To fix that would take almost as much time as transcribing the entire selection by hand. |

To extent his question what sports are there in Shadowrun. The current sports are there, all be it locations are different, but what new sports have evolved?

Well, there's always Combat Biking and Urban Brawl, and of course various illegal and semi-legal bloodsports.

I don't imagine that bloodsports have the same commercial impact as do the regular sports. It's hard to promote star players in a game with a massive rate of turnover. |

IMHO (as a resident of the city where Barry Bonds plays baseball), modern sports leagues are already conflicted about use of enhancements. Many fans want to see more and more extreme play. Some aspects of this go back to the archaic Olympics; way back then, at least one writer opined that a person becoming a specialist in one event made them less of a well-rounded human and role model. My read of many SR writers is that top-down-enforced puritanism is even rarer in the 2070s than it is today. Sure, if you wanna live only with other humans, or only other chaste vegetarian Buddhists, or if you're Amish, you can find an appropriate co-op, but if you want people with badges and guns to go around making sure that *no one* eats meat, making sure that no uses alcohol or caffiene in the privacy of their own home, making sure that no adepts play sports as entertainment, or making sure that no one burns an offering to Asherah, well, that's an uphill fight.
In my preferred SR setting, if the NFL and NHL prohibit adepts, then Horizon will start a no-holds-barred league and viewers will change channels. Evo and Xenome will sponsor atheletes as spokespeople for specific augmentations. "Here's Joe Slugger, six-time champion due to his new improved wired reflexes - buy your own today - discount with the Suburban Kshatriya package and season tickets!" |

..there is one more sport, but it is only popular in the two Tirs, which is Hurling (or more commonly referred to as field hockey) Hurling is a very vicious game I have seen matched in RL and it is almost no holds barred. First there are no pads, second each player has these big sticks not unlike what you see on the ice-bound version. The one thing is they frequently "check" and even use the stick on an opposing player. Kind of strange to think of elves being into such a violent game, but I guess everyone needs a way to blow of steam.
Another sport that isn't mentioned very much is Football (the non-NFL version of it). My current campaign takes place in Europe and kicked off in the UK, and I have dropped numerous references to the Premier League for fluff/colour purposes. As a matter of fact one of the main NPCs is a big follower of the Arsenal FC. |

There is also the tradition Amerindian sport that lacrosse is based on, played in the NAN obviously. It is one of the few sports that allows magic in play.

... In the little of the match I saw (on Fox Sports International while switching though channels one evening), that was kind of how it appeared to me. Of course I never actually watched a Field Hockey match for very long to really notice the difference between the two sports. All I saw were players on a field with sticks knocking a ball back & forth, and occasionally bashing each other. Looked a lot like the NHL without the ice. |
