Magic and Essence:
That seems clear enough. Resonance and Essence:
:wobble: Okay... also clear but rather surprising in that it appears that Essence does not reduce the technomancer's maximum Resonance, just the current Resonance. Fair enough. And this is backed up in other parts of the Technomancer writeup where the beginning Resonance maximum of 6 is treated as a fixed figure, such as:
Now then... If I'm reading this correctly, at character creation, a technomancer with a little cyberware (say a first level encephalon) will have a Resonance maximum of 6, but will have to spend 65 build points to create a character with a Resonance of 6 which is then reduced to 5. The technomancer can eventually, with karma, raise that Resonance back up to 6. Alternately, can the character spend 40 build points to buy a Resonance of 5, have that reduced to 4, then spend 10 more build points to buy it back up to 5 (since it's not maxed)? -~GitM |

What you're looking for is on page 62, under Attribute Ratings > Essence Rating. They both lose both 1 point of current AND 1 point of maximum.

Thank you! Wouldn't it have been nice if the BBB had been written consistently? :S -~GitM |

Oh shits, does this:
BBB pg 232: As with Magic, cyberware and bioware limit Resonance. To determine the severity of this impediment, take any reductions from Essence due to cyberware and/or bioware implants and round up to the nearest whole number. This amount is deducted from the technomancer's Resonance. Mean that Nano's and Geneware dont affect Technos RES? |

Why wouldn't they? Nanoware = Cyberware and Geneware = Bioware. That simple logic aside, neither existed within the confines of the SR4 sourcebook so why would any of the rules specifically mention them at that point?

more to the point, nanoware is not just treated as cyberware for essence purposes, it just flat out *is* cyberware. just cyberware that has a much closer tie--in to nanotech than usual.
at least there might be some tiny scrap of possibility for geneware, if it wasn't for the fact that it is treated as bioware for the purposes of essence loss... and if this were a game that was only ever run by computers lacking the ability to extrapolate data. and if it wasn't for the fact that essence loss in and of itself causes resonance loss. honestly, i can only hope that there was some form of sarcasm or something in that post, because that level of inability to understand the basic concept underlying the rules is going to make it really hard to play shadowrun. a while back, someone had as their sig something to the effect of 'the fourth edition of Shadowrun was written by gamers, not rules lawyers. I'm convinced that's a good thing." while i don't fully agree with the logic (i personally feel that the game should be designed by gamers, then playtested by powergamers, munchkins, and rules-lawyers, and then modified based on the abuses and suggestions they give), it is a very important key to understanding SR4. without it, you'll have a really hard time, especially in certain areas of SR4 (like balancing spell designs, or doing pretty much anything in the matrix, which requires a whole heck of a lot of modification to make it playable). (sorry for the mini-rant, not quite sure why that just got started =S ) |
