Actually, you do. Any tradition is just a construct of believe that let's you access magic. So if you have a batshit crazy tradition you get power for beeing crazy.

You spend the time researching out it's true name, align with its enemies, come across a major artifact, and use a lot of blood magic.

It also helps if you manage to capture and manipulate it young. No one said it was a greater dragon.
