I am trying to figure out how to start with an ally spirit.
Do i spend power points instead of karma, as with folci? Or is there a way to use build points? |

You can use BP as karma (expensive!) or better yet, use BeCKs. I'm not sure if McMackie's supports buying an Ally, but you can always reserve the amount of karma you'll need.
