...I am looking very forward to spending a good amount of time in Germany during my upcoming trip. Most of the areas where the great JS Bach and Martin Luther spent their lives were in the DDR when I was last there. Cities like Halle, Leipzig, Köthen, Weimar, Erfurt and Wittenberg were all behind the old Iron Curtain (not a recommended destination for an American to travel in the early 70s though I did go to Berlin and had the opportunity to visit a Great Aunt in the eastern sector on a special visa).

Of course I will be "training" it all the way once I'm over there.

I went to the Neue Laender (if they still call them that) back when they were the DDR. It was a fascinating trip! We hit both Berlins, Leipzig, Meissen, and Dresden. It was in the 80s and we were given extensive "briefings" about what to do and not do...still have the hundreds of pics I took back then (of the stuff we could take pictures of).

My g/f and I are saving up our money to head over there as well this year to visit my family and friends as well as her family.

don't trust any mile-stones you get to see in the old eastern-zone . . they had them placed closer together than the actual difference they were meant to indicate so the people would think that their little batch of the fatherland is bigger than it as in reality *g*
and the mass-transit system is even better in hamburg than it is in most other cities in germany . . we've got at least 100 lines of busses, 4 different train systems and a whole part of ships being used as means of public transport *g*
this is one of the cities where you really do not need to have a drivers license to get around . . well, aside from the really far out places <.< . .

Oddly enough, every larger street in southern east germany leads to Bad Düben. And don't get the idea to stop and ask a local for the direction - you won't understand him.

Yeah, and we all know that Hamburg is so densely populated that there are no far-out places. :D

We have tons of cool metal festivals in august ;)
If you make it to Hannover or even Hamburg, we can held a small-time DS meeting. Ryu, Rotbart (whereever he may live), Stahlseele, you and me. :D

heck, the part about understanding them can be said for basically any part of germany . . the language german es it is used now is as far as i know based on the language in the guternerg bible, which itself again was used to make the bible available to all o germany and not only to the parts with the right kind of dialekt/accent, but i could be wrong about that *g*

and believe it or not . . there ARE some places in Hamburg that are only thinly populated and very hard to reach/navigate by means of public transport . . but that is mainly because Hamburg is still a growing city which just kinda expands untill little villages that were not part of hamburg before suddenly are *g*

That was the point I tried to make ;)
Places like Norderstedt, Mümmelmannsberg and southern Harburg are far from the shot.

...that would be cool. International Shadowrunning. I have just about everything on PDF all the way back to 1st & 2nd ed so no need for me to carry a 25 kilos of books around. When I get confirmed dates I will let you know.

well . . yes, for our standards that is pretty bad, but those two are pretty much the dead end as far as hamburgs mass transit is compared *g*
Norderstedt Mitte is end of line for the subway U1 but is directly connected to the A2 Trains and has at least 7 Bus-Lines starting/ending there *g*
Mümmelmannsberg is end of the line for subway U3 and has only 3 bus lines starting/stopping there . . and yes, i just happen to know that ^^

Speaking of metal festivals:
It's not rock-solid yet but I'll most likely be at Dong Open Air (July 18-19) and Summer Breeze (August 14-16).
Any other German Dumpshockers going there?

...guess I'm the old fashoned type as I would more likely find myself at the Berliner Philharmoniker or attending the Bayreuth Festival. Then there's all those magnificent two and three century old Orgeln in the various churches which are still being played. To hear an instrument that was around at the time the Great J.S. Bach was alive (and maybe even played by him) like that wonderful Schnitger organ at St Jakobi in Hamburg would be priceless. Of course I have to go to St Thomas in Leipzig, even if the organ there is a newer one, just to hear his music in those acoustics.
