Alright, my boss has actually agreed to send me to some training courses for physical security on her dime which, of course, translates into SHADOWRUN AWESOMENESS!!! (This is actually part of my greater plan to have professional experience in every major aspect of the Shadowrun universe runners will regularly encounter, however it was definitely one of the more expensive steps.)
However, I can't seem to find very many places that actually offer courses on physical security. Information security course, of course, are coming out the whazoo (that's the easy step in my evil plan). So, in order for me to become a better GM in all things Shadowrun, I turn to the general user community in hopes that someone in the user community can clue me in to what I'm missing. Googling 'physical security training' is turning up duds, where do people go to get trained in this stuff? Security forces haven't just been making it up as they go the whole time? (As an aside, I'm also starting to get the nagging suspicion that physical security people are generally luddites...) |

Hmm, odd you are having trouble finding courses. Do you live in a city? I regularly see ads for specialty schools that offer security guard training and classes. Tons of them, really.

Yes, I'm in the DC area, however I don't read newspapers or watch TV, so I'm mostly only vulnerable to online adverts.

I know a fellow in NYC, a former marine, who might be able to train you. What is your time frame/geographic boundaries/precise goals from training?

I've been wanting to try out Blackwater's courses for some time now but haven't had the money.
http://www.blackwaterusa.com/courses/AT_nc_speciality.html The keyword you're looking for is tactical. http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl...amp;btnG=Search http://www.google.com/search?num=50&hl...amp;btnG=Search http://www.google.com/search?q=private+tac...lient=firefox-a |

The training must be before the end of the year. It must be from a real training facility so my boss will pay for it. It must be about securing a facility (while I'd love to take a course at blackwater, executive protection doesn't quite fit). It must be in the US (preferably DC).
Looking online, the vast majority of stuff is IT security or security guard training. If it helps, imagine what you'd want if you were drawing out the map of an office building for runners to hit. What skillsets would you want to draw on? |

Googling tactical physical security training landed me a few decent hits including a nice group that offers IED disarming courses.
Defender Consulting has a course called Sensitive Facilities Physical Security, which sounds like what you're looking for, but I don't know their schedule. If you work at a nuclear power plant the DOE also offers relevant courses and Homeland security has them for State and Federal employees. |

"physical security training" (with quotes) brings up many hits that appear to be relevant.

What skillsets would you want to draw on? Could you possibly take a tactical handgun course? Those would be easy to find, and if we're talking about securing a facility I don't think you're going to easily go ahead and get SWAT training or anything like that. EDIT: DC sucks balls because it tends to restrict handgun ownership. I'm not sure how this might affect you in your particular circumstances, however. |
