I'm looking for two catagories

Fight/get pumped music (i.e. Let the Bodies hit the Floor)

And music that's better for background during a game. Stuff that isn't distracting, but still mood setting. Preferably for a Shadowrunish setting. But I'd be interested in something more Fantasy. For example I though just putting in my old mechwarrior 2 CD and playing that worked in the past.

i.e.

I've discovered that video game music are really good for PnP games since they are often designed to be looped and not too distracting. Some of them can be downloaded freely as well, which is also a good thing, here is a list of free good music:

Action music:
* The music from the Action UT2004 mod. Download the mod, and just take the .ogg file in the music folder. Same with the music from Killing Floor, with some action and some ambient tracks.
* Tapan Kaikki's music: excellent action music.

Ambient music:
* Dreamweb OST: Old school yet still good ambient cyberpunk music (or maybe that's because I automatically associate it with the game's atmosphere)
* Syndicate war's OST: 3 long tracks, perfect as a background for a cyberpunk game.
* Deus Ex: Invisible War's OST. Good tracks too.
* Harmony Steel's Shadowrun music

I got one picky group when it comes to music so some of these were played only once (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) But I think they would have all fit to SR.
Ambient:
Equilibrium soundtrack
Silent Hill soundtracks (needs bit of checking as some are... not too suitable)
Terminator 2 soundtrack
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines soundtrack

for bit faster:
One Must Fall

otherwise I got Metallica, Amorphis, Sentenced, The 69 Eyes, Rage, Nine Inch Nails and Rammstein playing (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hell March from Red Alert is good 'get pumped' music, that turns to ambient techno for the second half; it would probably be perfect for a shadowrun fight scene.

Battle Without Honour or Humanity is awesome fight music too.

Some of the tracks from DOOM & DOOM2 make awesome intense ambience, others make great fight music.

Edit: The Terran tracks from starcraft could make good ambient music, and There She Is by Witches could work for a more light-hearted chase scene.

I have to agree. There's a point when it can't even be considered Troll Metal.

Brutal Death Metal is still metal, like it or not. So is extremely badly produced Black metal. Technically, even though I deny and dislike it intensly, even Nu Metal is still metal.

Go listen to Helloween, Iron Maiden, even Accept or Nightwish, then listen to Cannibal Corpse, or any other black / death 'metal.' They are not the same style of music (and I cringe at using the word 'music' to describe the latter...)

If you want ambient techno, I'd recommend Orbital. Specifically songs like Belfast or Desert Storm. They're bouncy enough to keep you alert but they aren't particularly intrusive beats.
