I like rewarding good, because without a supernatural force rewarding good, the shadows seem to reward evil more naturally. I like a balancer, and it gives me (and my players) a warm fuzzy when they sacrifice alot for the sake of good. Without it, I am going to have too many evil players (I guess the people I play with yearn to Role Play bastages because IRL they are nice guys with strong morals). If you get a reward then you aren't making a sacrifice. Upholding a rigid code of moral principals should be difficult and accomplishing the difficult thing should be its own reward. Giving out rewards for "good" behavior means that the PCs are simply so corrupt and peccant that they accept bribes to override their own better judgments. Of course, I must also question what standards you are using to define "good" because there are many to choose from. |

I prefer viewing Karma as a mystical force, a kind of "life energy" if you will. It represents the fruit of work done; the more effective you were, the more objectives you completed, the more Karma you earn. Good vs Evil comes out in the roleplay, not the karma awards... although good roleplay *does* often earn a karma award.
Now, Evil is a tricky one. I don't buy the amoral type, who just burns down an orphanage for fun. I want someone who can justify doing it in character. If he's able to do that, then he may be considered for a roleplay bonus. |
