My motherboard got brokded on my desktop, and will take about a month to RMA. This laptop cant really run VS 2008 very well, so I wont be able to resume development for a little bit, but I'm collecting all of your bug reports...

This is such an excellent program that I find it difficult to believe that it doesn't have the Qualities from Augmentation available, if I've simply over-looked the option someone please let me know how to access it. If it hasn't been implemented yet, is there a timeline for when that might be available? I've been searching for a generator that takes into account the bio-compatibility 10% discount on cyberware for a while now and this program is the best I've seen yet. Here's hoping!

Behavior on Vista (64bit ultimate, 4gig ram and quad core AMD) is rather weird. For me it takes around 2 minutes to bring up all the way.
While initializing it starts at around 250meg resource usage and slowly ramps up to 1548meg resource usage, processor usage shows it eats an entire core by itself. About halfway through initializing, when it peaks at 1.5gig memory, it starts dropping back down slowly. Eventually settling on a little over 500meg usage. It stays there until I close the program, though the processor usage drops to nothing after it finishes initializing. I wonder if it's a 64bit problem, or if it's with the "advancements" in vista/7? Awesome program, gives me something to flesh out my 300 character ideas with. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

Not your fault vista's base memory hog is 1gig physical. Imagine my surprise after building this machine from blood sweat and thermal grease, specifically adding 4gig of ram because I hate HD thrashing from swapfile use, just to find out that's barely enough to keep vista running.

Notes from my use of the program.
Shapeshifting, vampires, and other races in runners companion haven't been added. Seems to be a bug in calculating the magic BP cost. Im not sure of the cause but every now and then the cost of a 0 magic rating is negative BP throwing your total off if you don't catch it. Reseting from adept to none and back to adept seems to fix the problem though. |

Make sure to double check those before printing. (They display correctly while viewing them in the program, but the print sometimes turns out hoaky.) I'll fix these as soon as I am able... (again, I wont even be able to proceed until my motherboard comes back.) Thanks for keeping track of your issues and reporting them! d:- D PS...ya I havent gone through Runners Companion Yet. Any qualities listed there were added by a community member who decided to write up a data file. I'm presently going through arsenal...Armor is on deck. |

One thing my group does, which I'm surprised isn't done on your program, is a separate armor page (much like the weapons page, this includes armor mods, etc.). You also seem to be forgetting the military-armor specific add-ons, like the articulated weapon arm. Other than those two issues and a few stated before, I love it!

The 4.0.0 version will simply not work on my Vista machine. I get the splash image, then an error window pops up with this message talking about a negative length, seems the length of a string.
[ Spoiler ] After reading the above problems on Vista, I checked the ressource usage and there does not seem the problem does not seem to come from that: I still have plenty of memory when it crashes. The 3.14 version works just fine, though. |

Navigate to that file (<install directory>\Data Files\defaults.data) then replace its contents with the following defaults: CODE 400|200|35|35|4|10|5|15|5|10|12|A|6|6|4|4|False|True|50|5000|6| ************************************ **EDITING THIS FILE IS NOT ADVISED** ************************************ Yes I realize the irony in the disclaimer of that file. Let me know if that works! d:- D |

Hi,
Thanks for the input. I checked the file, it was good. I found out that the program launches correctly when run from the last window of the installer, when offered the choice to launch the program or view the readme file. But when using the desktop shortcut, the start menu shortcut (they seem to be the same) or navigating to the directory to click directly on the SR4CharGen.exe icon, it crashes. Could it be a path problem? The program is installed in "C:\Program Files\SR4CharGen". The starting directory for both the desktop and the start menu shortcuts is "C:\Program Files\SR4CharGen\Data Files\Custom". These paths were the same for the 0.3.14 version. But when launching the 0.3.14 version directly from the GUI instead of using a shortcut, the program launches correctly. So the starting directory has no influence on the 0.3.14 version. |

Whoa, what? the shortcuts are to the custom data file location?! Try uninstalling all versions of the charGen on your comp, making sure to backup your characters and custom datafiles, then just reinstall the new version fresh. Let me know if that works. PS if the error happens again, do this: 1) open your control panel 2) click regional and language options (or something similar to that) 3) on the regional options tab, select English(United States) 4) restart your comp if it prompts you to 5) start up the chargen 6) copy the *English* error report so I can read it ^^ 7) repeat steps 1-2 and then select your language of choice. d:- D |

I got it. It is the Vista account checking system that prevents the access to defaults.data. Long story short: if I install the program under a user directory instead of Program Files, it works. It must have worked when launching from the installer because the installer has super user rights (doesn't this looks like a security breach?)
I don't know what changed between the 0.3.14 and the 0.4.00 to make this happen, though. I want to kill Bill... |

I didnt change anything that would affect permissions that I'm aware of, although something could have inadvertently caused the problem. Glad its fixed though! |

Glad its fixed though! Thanks (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) There seems to be a bug with the cost of the Magician and Mystic Adept qualities when mixed with other qualities. Make a Magician character. Total BP for positive qualities: 15. Give him Focused concentration (that costs 10 BP). The total quality cost jumps to 20 instead of 25. Do the same for a mystic adept and the cost is 10 initially, but it jumps to 25 instead of 20. The effect is the same when adding any quality. If you first make your character an Adept or Technomancer, then pick the quality, then change your character to Magician, it gets the numbers right. |

I was playing with the Chargen just to amuse myself and noticed that if I go to the "Manage Custom Items" and enter my own weapon it adds it near the end of the "Core Ranged Weapons" list, then the last two weapons on the "Core Ranged Weapons" disappear (the ones that would be after it), and the entire "Arsenal Ranged Weapons" list goes with them. In other words, the weapons list ends wherever it sticks the new weapon, no matter how many were supposed to be after it.

Don't know if anyone else found this yet, can't find any mention of it.
Dell XP pro laptop, kinda old but runs great. When I close the lid and put it into standby mode while the program is running, it seems to triggers a save character dialog. Open the lid to bring it out of sleep and the save dialog keeps the program locked, which seems to interfere with the machine returning from sleep mode for awhile. Takes about 10-15 minutes of black screen and no response before it to wake back up if I have chargen running. Normal wakeup time is 10 seconds total, that includes time for the wireless to reestablish a link. Note the program doesn't actually close or anything once I get in and can deal with the dialog, it just acts like it got the shutdown command. Shutting down normally with the program running triggers the same dialog, and shuts the program down instantly once dealt with, like any good program. Standby notice getting misinterpreted as a system shutdown notice? |

Standby notice getting misinterpreted as a system shutdown notice? For now, I would exit the program before placing my computer in standby mode. Its likely the program is receiving a shutdown command before your computer enters standby. I'll look into the issue. |

Ya, Vista behavior is weird on some machines, taking up an obscene amount of system resources. Its likely a 64 bit vista/windows 7 issue, and I have no idea how to fix it. Until I get my mobo back, I cant even resume development at a reasonable pace. I would suggest trying XP compatibility mode, but it seems that even that doesnt help in most cases. I apologize for the inconvenience of this. It's frustrating for me too. Make sure you have the latest updates for .NET That seems to have solved the massive resource use on Windows Vista Enterprise x64. It still takes far to long to load but I figure that is because everything is loaded at once instead of as needed. |

I just found the errata for SR4A, and the way i see it, this is not a new edition of SR but rather a balance of the current version. I'll have to think hard about if i want to treat it as a different version or not. My main problem is this: SR4A incorporates all of the previous errata. If I want to treat this as a new version, I have to arbitrarily choose a point at which I exclude an errata and call it pure SR4. There are basically several versions of this version of SR (SR4). Now, I wont be able to offer the option to choose which errata you would like to use because I don't even have all of the errata, or that sort of patience, ha. As for the differing gameplay mechanics specifically mentioned in the SR4A book, that will be an issue that each GM will deal with, but the balance of items and skills is the chargen issue. thoughts? It is actually worse than that. I have found a couple of places where they missed the previously published errata (THe Combat Mage template is the only one I can think of at the moment bit I know I have found at least three instances) |
