Quick question about he Att. Boost adept power.
It states that you roll (Att Boost + Magic) dice, and the number of successes corresponds to the stat increase provided. I would expect that the maximum number of successes would be limited by the level of attribute boost, but I can't seem to find where that would be mentionned. If that's really RAW, then why would you take a second level if you have a magic of 5 or 6? Please help me. |

because you can roll more dice and thus probably get more successes and a higher rise?

The increase in drain is, however, annoying. By my calculations you should see almost no risk of appreciable drain if you keep the rating of the power below a quarter of your Body + Willpower. But, extra levels in the power don't really give you as big a benefit as the first. Still might be useful to take additional ranks since more hits have a twofold benefit.

I don't see any reason you can't. It's just that the duration that you get your boost for is determined by the number of hits you get. You have to use it before any combat, and if you're relying on Edge (and you aren't Mr Lucky) then you're looking at a pretty stringent limit on the number of times you can get into a fight.

I suggest no more than 2 ranks, depending on your magic score. Increasing Magic has the same DP benefit, as well as giving you more PP.

The Attribute Boost is cheaper by level than either increasing Magic or acquiring a Power Focus, so build it up as high as you can while still being safe with Drain.

He means that if you take it at a rating higher than 1 or 2, you are likely to wind up taking stun damage when you use the power. I fall into the 1 or 2 camp as well. Beyond that, it reaches the point of diminishing returns. Each additional level adds a dice, so each level gives a 1/3 chance of one more point - but, each level is also a point of stun that you need to soak, which generally takes about three dice. This is Body plus Willpower, so maybe a troll tank with decent Willpower could handle a level of 3 or 4, but for most people, 1 or 2 is the "safe", and most cost-effective, level.

Yes, OK, then we are saying the same thing. I left it a little less specific to allow for variance in Attributes.

At magic 6, the boost to get the second level is +1 dice (from 7 to (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) , which is minimal. But the increase in stun is relatively very significant, since now you might fail to soak it on - say - 6 dice. Also, you spend .25 points of power which could be used better elsewhere, like for another level 1 boost to a different stat.
Seems to me like the first level is worth 10 times more than level 2 in attribute boost, all things considered. Level 2 and especially 3 or 4, are next to useless in comparison. I think you receive too much by paying too little on that first point. |

You can voluntarily choose to use less hits on this power, so you don't have to soak all of the drain. However, you are correct that this is a Power where the Rating of it (beyond getting the first level) means very little.

QUOTE Drain is fixed at the Rating of the power in Stun. Simple fix: 1) Base Drain on hits, not on Rating. 2) Resist Drain with (higher of Body or Willpower) + Rating (the higher the rating, the better you can use the power) |

Having used Attribute Boost for a number of characters, even a Rating 3 or 4 is not too bad... You are now soaking drain at the level of the Mage casting Power Bolt at Force 4-6 or so, and you probably have a better physical Body stat (as a PhysAd) and comparable Willpower as the straight mage...
Rarely have I ever taken drain on 3 or 4 Stun... with Drain Dice pools of around 9 for soaking the drain for my PhysAds... My Two Cents |
