well, the more you use it the more quickly you can distinguish objects and even gain depth perception. it just takes a little getting used to. the other CROW gunner used to get motion sick after an hour or so.
but back to the original point, we can see what artificial thermographic might be like. for SR we just add a few colors, perhaps clearer edges, and even the HUD on the CROW could be an AR. for metahumans this doesnt seem to apply as the 'overlay' concept is what we find in the book and has been fairly thouroughly addressed here (unprovable fantasy mechanics aside). those with the cybered version will have gotten used to it within a week or less and can switch it on and off. and the last vid is just pure 'dumb joe' (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wobble.gif) |

Blindfox, thank you for those images and thank you for serving in the armed forces!
I don't want to make an assumption and be an asshat, so what branch of service are you in? |

army infantry. a nice generic way to say it
more specifically ive been a grenadier, machine gunner and MG team leader, infantry team leader, squad desginated marksman, recon sniper, and some other stuff but that about sums it up fairly quickly. my love for rpg's, in a big way, pushed me into doing this kind of work. i mean, you ever played a really cool or tense game of shadow run and said "man, i wanna do that!" yeah, that was me. |

someone mentioned the increased heat and thus visibility of vehicle tires, so i thought i'd introduce some science! The rubber in the tires is continuously stretched and relaxed as the wheels rotate and the load moves. This energy conversion is not 100% efficient and some portion is retained as heat. This property of rubber can be demonstrated with a common rubber band. Rapidly stretch and relax it for 30 seconds or so and you will find it noticeably warmer. Health and safety requires me to warn you to wear safety glasses in case the band snaps!
In reference to the OP's post, those of you that find yourselves in London might find The Science Museum interesting. In the kiddy educational section is a fun exhibit involving a thermo camera. You can stand in front of it and watch yourself displayed on a large screen and play with various materials to see how they affect the image. Some materials are IR opaque, some rapidly absorb heat and hand prints are clearly visible for some time afterwards. It's great fun, if you can muscle the children out of the way! |

Well, compared to me, obviously he is, I've seen handguns (the ones our cops here carry) and a few rifles (the ones those french army guys carry in Paris) and that's about the extent of my expertise...
And the closest I ever got to thermo vision was when I was drunk and set my eyebrow on fire... Yeah... He's the expert... |

And the closest I ever got to thermo vision was when I was drunk and set my eyebrow on fire... LMAO! Okay, you, ArkonC, are the expert on ... okay, maybe not expert, which may be a good thing. Let's consider this ... QUOTE (SR4, pg 108) Rating 1 Beginner Has done this a few times. Can handle some easy tasks, some of the time. Technical Example: Hobbyist. Given that alcohol provides some penalties, a glitch is easily expected, and, my, that really sounds like a glitch. Of course, on the bright side, you are in league with Adam Savage from Mythbusters. He, too, singed an eyebrow off, and he wasn't even drunk! (He was getting paid, though.) [I mean no offense, and I hope no one was injured, but dude, the imagery is, well, see my response above.
