I am looking to get back into SR and the guys want to play Pirates again as it always seems to be the most fun and actually the games that had so much more potential. This post is more to reach out to people for ideas on what might have changed since the book was printed the rules have advanced. So far I got the guys to agree with the point system for character creation and they really havent ran into any major issues with the rest of the rules compared to what they remember playing.

You may want to check out Runner Havens. Hong Kong is a rich setting for a piracy campaign.

I actually just read Cyberpirates! the other day. It was a pretty entertaining book, and well worth the read. A somewhat generic section about Cal-Free piracy, then write-ups about the Carribean, Phillipino, and African piracy scenes, as well as some wacky rumors about Madagascar. The book is nearly 100% fluff, so I'd say you can import that stuff into your game no problem. Plus, The Gingerbread Man's Caribbean write up was pretty funny (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) - it anticipates some of the p2.0 stuff in LA.
Plus, you get gems in the Shadowtalk section such as this: QUOTE ...If you worry about killing the endangered, do what I did. Catch a Warek, a Leopard Shapeshifter. They're a renewable resource. Everytime I skinned mine, he regenerated, at 1,500 nuyen a skin. I got 60,000 nuyen out of him before he chewed his legs off and got bloody enough to squeeze his head out. He's still out in the world somewhere, alive and free. Megalodon meat works the same way. I could feed the world if I had stronger facilities and fewer squeamish people like you. -Ago Krote For 4th ed, Lagos in Feral Cities has a bit about African piracy, but I felt Cyberpirates! covered that better. The Seattle write up in Runner Havens barely touches upon Puget Sound piracy. LA in Corporate Enclaves has a little bit about sea based gangs, but it's mostly geared towards underwater archeology and treasure hunting. |

So Octopiii, care to add in a bit of fluff on Puget Sound piracy inthe 2070s? Perhaps the story of a man with NoFear...?

Suffice it to say, he's the anti-Daredevil. Who doesn't have to worry about being blind anymore. And they say the future is bleak - Cybereyes ftw! |

We run piracy like described in Cyberpirates - mainly in the Caribbean, where the pirates usually want fame almost more than fortune, and the cut throats from Africa.

QUOTE I'd hate to be That Guy who rambles on about their character. I was hoping for a few short highlights to build some NPC pirates (individuals and/or groups) from. A few highlights on equipment, tactics, and likely targets of the Sound pirates would be pretty interesting in general, and I'd have even more use for them... One of the more memorable and enduring SR campaigns I ran was a Cyberpirates! campaign based in the Caribbean. The characters were originally based in Miami, but later obtained an island as their base after I ran them through a series of missions themed after the Isle of Dr. Moreau. Previous to this one of the PCs had become a Cyberzombie, and he resurfaced on the island as one of the runners main opponents. I also ran a series of missions in this campaign that took place on a huge oil tanker they were trying to hijack, but which turned out to be a veritable Ghost Ship.
As noted, Cyberpirates! is pretty much entirely fluff, so it should be easily portable to SR4. I don't think the Caribbean League has been touched upon much since then, but other piracy hot spots may have been. |

I would second the Feral cities suggestion, as alot of pirate havens exist in cities that are effectively lawless.
I bet Somalia is still a pirate haven. |

Well, I can flesh out my Tacoma contacts out a bit... [ Spoiler ]

Brilliant stuff! Expect an extra share of karma next session, and I'll be sure to work the above into a run soon.

I bet Somalia is still a pirate haven. I bet it is, as well. Because when it comes to Africa there is only one default setting (SNAFU) and there isn't a whole lot of creativity running through the game; just a whole lot of what's going on now with cyber and magic (which doesn't integrate well and creates shitty, muddled settings). Of course, most people don't know that Somalia's only been in its currently-fucked state for less than twenty years. Not that it's ever seemed to matter when it's come to Third/Fourth edition writing outside of various historically-releated easter eggs. |
