Broken Angels, only because I just read that last week and am in the middle of Woken Furies right now.

And Mr Big and Tall stores have an even larger market in 2070....

Altered Carbon, actually. Kovacs reflects on how he was taught to shop by a Marine Sergeant, and that the essence of shopping was flexibility. Same series, all good books. I'm actually in the process of reading AC for the... oh, fifth time, while one of my shippmates finishes up with Morgan's latest.

sure fashion models today are going for that stick figure/elf look but realitry we have curves. hips, back sides and boobs. We might asspire to what the media tells us is 'perfection' but the truth is I am not going ot have thatlook in jeans.

This actually started out because of my husband. We were in a bar and he pointed out the bartenders, a tall leggy blond. she was fending off several drunks competantly and Tim said to me "God knows why they'll hitting on her, she's got no but." That made me pay attnetion as I had already been thinking 'tall, leggy, blond, yup elf' but that made me pay attnetion to the cut of the jeans and I know I have a btter back side than she had but those jeans of hers would just not work on me with shorter legs and better curves on hips and but. So while high fashion might be elf like reality is going to be differnet, just like RL.

Also don't over look the Japanese market power. Japanocorps control a lot of the media and they have an anti-meta prejudice. They may well be playing down leggy for the more traditional Japanese 'cute' look, that's RL and mentioned in shadows of Asia. In one of the novels as reporter had cosmetic surgery to look more NAN/Asian to boost her career.

Allow for latin taste as well. in RL look at the fashions on Spanish language TV. stick figure elfs would be competeing with busty latinas in the media and since AZT controlls many consumer goods they will be pushing back in the meida too.

Some very good points. I went back to think it over, and gave more thought to what I think of as "elves" in the 6th world. I realized that I don't actually visualize them as being that scrawny, just much taller and more slender. Most modern fashion models, to whom I was cattly referring, are generally shapeless in my opinion, and that's not very elven to my thinking. I still say they (elves) would have an easier time in the coture sections than the normal sections. And while the Japancorps have tremendous influence, modern fashion has long come from Europe and parts of North America; I don't see that changing overmuch other than to create a NEW fashion category as opposed to wiping out the traditionals. SR4 fluff suggests that the trends swing widey between seasons as well, so that might mean some months it's easier, and others it's harder. Especially with Tatiana, the new physical adept prima ballerina for the Moscow Ballet who is a troll with the most incredible body, capable of making leaps that have to be seen to be believed! Suddenly the fashion houses are all about emphasizing soulders and hips... for a few weeks anyhow. (That's a joke, not canon BTW.)

I picture every sort of chain and department store having an "elf section," not so much for elves but for the much larger market of elf posers and to take advantage of how "cool" elves are seen. Who wouldn't want to dress like an elf? They're all so stylish! I forsee very "Elvish" names for these clothing lines like "Galadriel" and "Lady Drizz't."

lol, like how some designers 'change' sizes to make women feel better about our sizes?

Guys if you don't know, one of the reasons we have try things on when shopping is because one designers saize 10 might be anothers size 6, the guys labeling it a '6' is hoping to get women to buy him so they can say "I'm a 6" even when they are probably looking like a stunt double for the ballet scene in Fantasia.

That's an interesting idea and kind of more like where I was going. I'm sure the couture shops would keep seperate sections but not all elves have the money for that and will be at Macy's or Walmart. That could be an interesting run- destroy that shipment of 'faux' elf fashions because they are made for posers or asking for the elf section and being asked 'real?" so it will be cut right. Think of the dialogue
real elf: "Damn it, I bought these jeans in the elf section at Walmart but look how baggy it is on my ass. This is for the posers."

Seriously last time I bought a new jacket for my RL motorcyle I was in a leather goods store and when I said I wanted a new jacket for my bike the guy behind the counter asked if I really rode? He wasn't being rude just the real section was smaller than the poser section but it was much harder, durable leather than the softer 'poser fashion' jackets.

*gags* OK, there's no argument here. Oh, save us. And there's just going to have to be the equivalent on the other side, for the guys dying to get a piece of Legolas's action?
