I don't have my SSG with me, but that may be too short a hop for a sub-orbital. Sub-orbs are supposed to hop continents. |

If its too short for the sub-orbital, what would be the fastest way there?

You could probably do it with a semi-ballistic or jet air of some type (learjet or airline). |

I think I'll just double the real-life airline cost from one of those internet ticket places. Thanks folks.

.5¥ per km for a smeiballistic travel. .1¥ per km for air travel via HCST. Both would be realitively fast. Semi-ballistic would get you there in 20 minutes or less. HCST would probably be in between 20 and 30 for that distance. Hope that helps. Pg. 124 of the SSG by the way. |

Suborbital would probably take longer and cover a larger amount of area because for a hop that short the angle would be insanely steep.

You're welcome Yasha. Yea Kagetenshi. I'm thinking that short a distance would be best for an HCST. |

I'm not so sure. The Seattle-Anchorage distance is ~2400 miles/3800km. Shipping to Alaska That's a 2-hour trip on a mach 2 HSCT (ignoring takeoff, landing, and processing at both ends), and on par with the range of intermediate range ballistic missiles. For that range, I think you'd expect a low-fuel, low velocity, low angle arc just above the atmosphere, not a very steep one. So, semi-ballistic or suborbital might be the way to go. Then again, 2 hours ain't bad. You'll probably spend more time in the airports, boarding, and taxiing than in the air. |

Fair enough. I have to confess that I don't have a very good mental picture of the distance involved.

I was also going to say, "Yeah, they're close, both somewhere way the heck northwest of me" but then I thought, "Wait, do 'close' and 'Alaska' belong in the same sentence?" So I used my Google Fu Do, and it was mighty indeed. ;) |

That distance (2400 mi) is for ground shipping, including going through Whitehorse, YT. Expedia says Seattle to Anchorage is a 1445 mi (2326 km) flight on Alaska Airlines. A Boeing 737 does it in 3 hr 10 min. [ Spoiler ]

Yeah, I was afraid of that, but I was too lazy to exercise further Google mastery to find other numbers. ;) |

Still, it's within the realm of a semi-ballistic and not too long a trip for an HSCT. The semi-orb would be a waste though. Why spend that kind of resources for such a short jaunt? |
