The 'art of the possible' indeed. Right now there's a very strong shift from empowering the nationstate towards empowering the individual (thanks to things like information technology, cheaper gene-splicing technology, etc.) I do wonder if military technology is going to go the opposite direction, towards a futuristic equivalent of a medieval knight, and how that'll impact politics.
