For those of you not in the loop of one of the best new series of paranormal, noir mystery, action books... well I guess this won't apply to you. But go read them none the less if you haven't. The Dresden Files are really good books. And the good news to those who have read them and have probably thought about a tabletop in the Dresdenvese, then your dreams have come true.

Dresden Files RPG

Sorry for the fan raging. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grinbig.gif)

Anyone who has already bought the books feel like sharing anything on the rules, in the PDF versions? I'm curious as to what type of system it is. D20, D6, D10?

I'm pretty sure it uses a variant of the Fate system.

From what little I've gleaned from it so far, it's VERY heavily ROLE-Playing based, rather than ROLL-Playing based. It revolves entirely around chosen "aspects" of your character. You choose the aspects, not from some list, but based on how the character grew up, how they developed, their base concept, etc etc. Apparently these aspects directly influence how/what you roll. A friend of mine is just starting to play with it, so I'm not totally sure how it works yet.

Don't let Jhaiisiin confused you. Lots of dice to roll. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) In fact dice to roll where some people get kinda uppity about dice being rolled, claiming that it isn't "roleplaying".

Silly kids, dice are for roleplaying.

Generic FATE 3.0 is available for download from here. Spirit of the Century, which uses Fate 3.0, is also there in HTML pages.

Dwight is right. I've gotten a look at the system a bit better since I posted, and yes, there's a significant amount of dice rolling.

I come from a background of tons of oWoD games, Shadowrun and a few D20, so the Fate system is SIGNIFICANTLY different than what I've every played before. It's interesting though, and I'm hoping I'll be able to convince someone to run the Dresdenverse for our group.

Both my GM and I are Dresden fans and I got to say the game does look very intriguing.
Plus "Evil Hat" has got to be one of the best names for any company ever. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rotfl.gif)

So what do you play, mojo-wise? Are we talking Billy-and-Georgia werewolves, full-on wizards, minor practitioners, Murphy-style mundanes who got entrained in everything?

And of course, can you play a Knight? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I haven't had time to read the RPG yet, but it looks gorgeous and the people that make up the Evil Hat are terrific.

Kincaid.

I looked through the character template spoilers and I am disappointed to note that there does not seem to be a template for people like Kincaid.

He is clearly a supernat, but he does not fit neatly into the compartments, just like Gard.

Because Kincaid hasn't been fully revealed in the books, he doesn't have a proper template yet.

That said, the book lets you play everything from vanilla normal mortal like Murphy all the way up to a White Council wizard or better. Each template requires a certain number of points, and the total available points to you at chargen is up to the GM. If the GM wants a much lower powered game, lower number of points. If he wants a more powerful game, larger number of points.

And yes, you can play a Knight.

Kincaid is most likely a "scion" of some powerful being, likely a god or something similar. And those are covered under the rules as an option.

The system as written has a fair amount of roll play but seems heavily based on role-play through the aspects system -- you get to roll a bunch of dice but it's almost always affected by your aspects.

The fact that the game is "set" officially during the war with the Red Vampires makes for interesting comparisons if you've read the last book, though...

Its clear which neat and clean compartment Gard is in. Have you not read Changes?

We play Dresden *in* SR. However, we have to fiddle around with the rules a bit. Dresden is tougher than SR will allow.

Let's not even talk about Sanya.

Is there a
[ Spoiler ]
template in the RPG? Which template on the website is usable for Gard?

I am not sure whether the author actually states it in his other books, but there has been many obvious signs about what she is. And in fact, I think he has done everything short of actually stating it, eg. the rune magic that blew elder Gruff away, the gatherer of the dead part just before Michael got shot, etc.

Evil Hat has released the first version of Fate 3.0 in the form of Spirit of the Century, and is currently working The Dresden Files RPG (details above). Both feature major revisions to the system, and will lead to a release of a revised core rule-set, which we hope to provide — free as always — once the Dresden Files RPG is completed.

Her nature is also revealed in the short story "Heorot," which takes place between White Knight and Small Favor.

Oh! And go read Changes! Gods is that an appropriate name! Do it!

Meh! Hardcover baby! Or e-book version. (I need to get off my arse and make a collection of the hardbacks.

Seriously though, it's totally worth it. So many amazing scenes in the book. That's all I'll say. Can't risk spoiling it for you.

You can just make it up. Templates are not classes, nothing stops you from creating your own.
Look at Molly's stats. She doesn't fit any template. She is somewhere between Focused Practitioner, Sorcerer and Wizard.

Like Changelings, who have no musts just list of mostly likely powers, there are so many different Scions that making unified template is futile.

It links the dice and other mechanics to the character personality and make-up via those words you use to describe your character. As I said, dice are for roleplaying.
