"Jazz. Do you see this?" She wished she had stowed her body somewhere easier to spot on the map. "Whatever it is, Winter is in here with us." LeFey tried to remember the procedure for dealing with looped cameras. "Is everyone outside alright? You haven't been getting calls for help or anything, have you?" A dissonant technomancer rampaging right under their noses was a disturbing thought. But also a possibility.

Bionode: Res 4(5), Sig 2, Sys 4, FW 3; Hidden; Biofeedback Filter(4), Analyze(3), Command(1), Edit(1), Scan(1), Sniffer(3), Spoof(1), Stealth(3), Shield(1), Tacsoft(2), Simrig(1)
[ Spoiler ]

Even though the information is mostly showing on tacnet, Sprogget feels it necessary to voice some comments about the situation on the team channel.
@Drakehunters[Sprogget]: <<They parked the bikes, and are continuing in on foot.  Looks like they know someone is here, but they may not know who or exactly where yet, and do not seem to know thay have been spotted.  The base specs for that rotodrone gives it’s top speed as 100, and acceleration of 10/25.  Not enough information to tell how it has been customized, but it makes a good weapons platform.  Looks to be rigged.>>

Seeing that there is going to be a little time before the gangers arrive, Sprogget sends a command to the monocycle dog brain, to bring it over to where the dead and captured gangers, and their gear are, and another command for G’Eye to join DR there.
@self:Once DR gets close, between the UWBR that G’Eye has, and the NLJD sensors in the backpack, I should be able to see|perceive any gear or ’tronix they have.

Waiting for the meat speed movement of his own drones, Sprogget considers the approaching rotodrone.
@self:I wonder if|hope I can take out|take over|mess with that drone.  Need to {locate} it first.  A Crack sprite customized with scan looks like the best tool|assistant for the job.
Reaching for the resonance, Sprogget moulds a sprite to help with the search.  He fails to get much of a grip though.  Fortunately the resonance is being forgiving, and the backlash is minimal.  On the second attempt, he gets a little better grip, but the assistant also fights much harder against his will, making him work a lot more to resist the fading.  He manages it, with just a little to spare.
@self:Come on FOCUS.
Finally on the third attempt, he manages to get hold of enough of the resonance to build the needed assistant, ready to do a single task.  It does not even work against his efforts.  It rezzes into his bionode, waiting for instructions.
@self:Slot, but that was way too hard.  Another thing I need to get better at.

@Crack Sprite(4)[Sprogget]:“Radar, this {rotodrone on tacnet} is a rotodrone headed this way, running hidden.  Please find a link to it’s matrix node for me”.

As the sprite targets the indicated area with it’s senses, Sprogget turn his attention back to the general situation shown on tacnet.

@self:They’re leaving the bikes behind?  To attempt to be quiet|sneak up.  I wonder if I can get to the bikes without them noticing?  Maybe plant a stealthed sensor to use as a tracker?  Need to watch out for that rigger too though.  Could be remote or fairly close.  Not likely on foot if doing VR for rigging.

Sprogget quickly plots a path, first west to get out of sight behind a couple rows of apartment blocks, then north to 39th Ave, and finally back east toward where the bikes were parked.  He loads the route into Banjo's dog brain, with instructions to hurry.
@Banjo:“Speed is more important than stealth to start, but approach target with full covert ops active”.
@self:If they do a cautions leap frog approach, and do not let the drone get too far ahead, Banjo should get to the bikes well after they are away from them, and just about the time they get to the bomb site|listening post.

He is just jumping into G’Eye, leaving Banjo on its own for a while, when Radar returns with the link to the matrix node.
@self:Whoa, that was quick.
@Radar:“Awesome work!”.
But he is talking to himself as the Sprite derezzes, leaving behind the link.

@self:Let’s let that drone and the Spined Drakes get a bit closer before I try slicing that node.  I can at least have a look at the walls|specs|ratings from outside, without risking alarms.
Pouring just a touch of extra resonance into his Analyze CF, Sprogget focuses his attention on the approaching drone’s matrix node, to learn a bit more about it.

@self:It’s past time to have a close look at what sort of gear these Spined Drakes are carrying too.
Dropping the enhancement to the Analyze CF, he temporarily links the NLJD sensors in the backpack with the dragonfly drone sensors, then crafts a custom sensor software complex form to examine the tech.  Keeping between the approaching opposition and the gear to be examined, Sprogget configures UWBR to use a directional beam pointed down and away before activating both it and the NLJD in the backpack.  Moving both G’Eye and DR along past the gear, body, and prisoner, he locates and inspects the gear with the combined sensor package.  Finished with the inspection, he releases the threaded complex form, undoes the temporary sensor changes, and sends the monocycle further south, then between decaying apartment blocks on the East side of the street, where there is room to continue out behind the buildings.  G’Eye, he controls himself, taking it quickly west along the edge of an apartment block, then north towards the approaching drone, to a position between buildings, with direct access to 96 Ave.  Stopping and holding position about 30 meters from the edge of the building nearest 96 Ave.  6 seconds before he wants a distraction, the drone will accelerate, so that it will come out from between the buildings already moving at top speed.  It will head nearly straight across 96th, running full defense, and duck between buildings on the other side.
@G’Eye[Sprogget]: <<When you start to move, unload the Covert Ops autosoft, and load Defense.  Before you become visible from the street, have the Chameleon coating set to look like a standard Mechanicals minidrone.  Also just before clearing the end of the building, activate UWBR, so we’ll get a good look at the rotodrone.>>

@self:And the gangers too, if they are not too far behind.

Looks like all of the pieces are moving into position.  Time to get ready to greet|smack|surprise that rigger.

Snake had hissed a warning just in time for Copperhead to stop at the edge of the weakened floor. As it crumbled under her, she quickly backpedaled and then the ghouls had attacked. They were pathetic, feeble things but there was a fragging lot of them.

Her shotgun barks twice as they rush her. The first one's head simply explodes, the second takes the shot square in the chest, falling into the pit intended for her.

Then, the rest of them are on her. A slash rips the face off one of them, knocking it back and over the balcony. Another claws it way up her arm towards her face. She crushes it against/through the wall next to her, its foul breath rushing from its lungs as it falls to the ground.

As the priest flies past her, she realises they are a distraction.

They are just slowing me down until the others get here. Frag, just how many of these fraggers are there.

She continues swinging at the feeble creatures, slashing at them with her razors and driving them back with powerful blows from her metal arms.

If I'm going down, I ain't going alone.

"We're exposed here Scrap!, let's get this drek into some cover where we can question him, rather than wait for his friends to find us out in the open!"

He reaches down and takes a grip on some clothing on the kid to drag him to a stand or just drag him physically if he's incapacitated

"Don't try anything stupid kid !... my friend here won't like it! can you walk ?" his voice is anything but friendly but he keeps the most of his emotion bottled up, the kid could have done any number of despicable things in the past despite his age, ScrapHeap is completely right, it doesn't take much more than desperate times to resort to desperate measure to survive, he only knows too well.

@Drakehunters[Crow]: <<Moving to somewhere quieter Sprogget, this TacNet thing working okay ? I got pings going off randomly, that just weather interference?>>

Crow taps on the basic comm housing on his chest rig as if to make it work better, "Jack, for once I trust you more, keep that beady eye o' yours on the place, I can't see drekk in this mess!"

@drakehunters[Sprogget]: <<The glitches could be from the storm, or it could just be that the system is trying to show you too much information.  My data looks good, but I have some extra filtering running for the sensors.  Clears the storm junk out nicely.

The important info just now, is those 2 armed and on foot gangers approaching from the north, and the rigged drone they have on point.  The drone is the biggest question.  No information about it’s sensors or armament yet.  I’m going to try hitting it matrix side when it gets closer, if they keep coming steadily.  If I can take it over fast, I might be able to lead the others right past your position.  Not sure I am good enough to do that or not, but going to try.  The drone should change from pending threat to under attack when I start.  If I succeed, it will switch to friendly.  Hold action unless it switches to active threat, or makes a break to alert those on foot.

I have G’Eye ready to be a distraction when I want to hit the drone, and Banjo is doing some flanking.  I hope to put a tracer on their bikes, if it looks like they are leaving.  For that, the longer they are away from the bikes, the better.

@Virtual Scream / Gossamer
[September 1, 2072, 17:04, Living Doll node]

PAN: N/A, SIN: None, Response 5*, Signal 3*, System (5), Firewall (4/6), (Analyze, Scan, Decrypt, Exploit [5, inherent], Stealth [7, inherent], Armour, Browse, Encrypt, Medic [6, ergo, optzd])

Gossamer frowned to herself as she watched the prowling IC. Although she was confident enough in her ability to bend the matrix around herself so that she couldn’t be seen she was less certain that Slater would be able to do the same.

"Well I think this is confirmation enough that there is something happening inside MMO that they don’t want anyone to see. Despite their best efforts I have found a chink in their armour. I will go inside and have a look around, if it is safe enough to do so I will insert a portal so that you can come inside too. I think it would be foolish to challenge that IC while they are on high alert, I trust that is acceptable?"

She then did something that would be impossible for a normal matrix user to do…twisting the raw nature of the code and inserting herself there in such a way that she was all but invisible to even a novahot decker and his programs. Her sylph icon faded away leaving a Cheshire smile for a moment before that too disappeared into the digital breeze…

Avoiding the panther abomination and its annoying counterpart she whispered her way into the system, taking care to mute her signal and making barely a ripple on the node she entered…

Scrapheap and Crow

Dragging the whimpering Drake off the road and rather ungently through a rubble strewn doorway is easy enough for the both of you. Although the shelter is rudimentary at least you are out of the stinging rain and the sulphery ash stink.

The tacnet spread across your vision shows you the approaching hostiles and while you wait for Sprogget to turn the drone back on its user you feel the seconds ticking by…

Sprogget

This could get messy fast…your sensors are indicating that the explosion has drawn people out of the Underworld, and if their security doesn’t interfere the Yaks very well might, particularly if they perceived whatever was happening as a threat to them. Whilst you might be willing to let them deal with the Drakes that was unlikely to get you any useful intel and they probably wouldn’t want to share whatever was left of the gangers once they were done…thankfully the crappy weather seems to be keeping them from doing much more than rubber necking at the smoking building that used to hold the Mechanicals listening post.

Spreading your net wide you move to encircle the incoming Drakes whilst capturing as much info as you can about their tech. The incoming drone is adopting a more combative stance, sweeping in increasingly erratic patterns as it approaches – they know you are here or here abouts! – although you have found its hidden node with comparative ease, and even broken the rudimentary encryption on the signal, you realise that it won’t accept any further commands as the rigger is there in person, jumped in

Your sensor sweep of the Drakes reveals very little, a few rogue RFID tags that you would expect to find on anyone in this day and digital age. Apart from that their links are running with wifi off, connecting directly with the smartguns they are carrying. There’s no sign of an active tacnet so presumably the one that the Freedomers mentioned is being run by someone not connected to these roving bands. The remaining gear is surprisingly primitive, tag free stuff that probably came from a military surplus store somewhere…

That drone is going to be on you soon…if you are going to try your distraction now is the time…!

"Jazz. Do you see this? Whatever it is, Winter is in here with us. Is everyone outside alright? You haven't been getting calls for help or anything, have you?"

"I see it. I’ll tell Breeze, perhaps she can deal with the loop, it’s not really my area of expertise. Good work on finding them! Sure you’ll fit in well here provided things don’t get too sour with these Disonants…"

You sense her speaking to eBreeze and suddenly the area of blank ash covered sprawl that you were seeing moments before is replaced with a new image… Winter turns to you both and wags a finger

"Now you’ve done it…"

The image you are seeing is of two ugly looking armoured vehicles…antique looking armour vehicles…the tagged info says “Property of the Metroplex Guard” along with a string of info that presumably gives their supply designations etc. The figure visible in one of the small turret hatches is wearing what looks suspiciously like Guard uniform although the signature decals have been blanked out and his digital profile eliminated…this is not good

@self:We could really do without the extra audience just now.  Best to finish this fast|soon before nightclub security decides to get involved, and make things more complicated.

Time to see about getting|try to get a tool|assistant to open up that drone firewall|protection.  Another Crack Sprite seems best|most useful.  I won't try for as much power this time, but the way that sprite confuses firewalls, I should be able to get in before alarms get triggered.

Feeling the resonance, Sprogget chooses a portion that seems best suited to the task at hand, and easily crafts it into a tool good for a couple of tasks.  Having just finished tuning the instructions for G’Eye, the icon for the assistant that forms, looks a lot like the drone.  Plenty of sensors to search out weaknesses in the firewall, and a coating to hide from and confuse detection.

@self:Timing|synchronization is going to be tight|close here.

@Crack Sprite:“I've got a job for you LanceHiding from|preventing|delaying detection as much as possible, cut through the firewall on {that} node to give me access.  You can confuse|mislead systems, so make that an admin account access.”.
@self:Admin is going to be slower, but a bit of extra time up front will make pwning|taking over that drone a lot easier after the rigger is taken care of.
[Lance]:“Acknowledged”.
As Lance turns his senses to the task of finding a flaw in the security, Sprogget kicks G’Eye into motion, and tells LeO to get moving too.  Tacnet shows the drones getting under way, and Sprogget manually updates the icon for the incoming drone, to show it being probed, so far undetected.

@Drakehunters[Sprogget]: <<Be ready.  It’s starting..>>

Leaving the drones to proceed on their own, Sprogget watches their progress while waiting for the sprite to get through, preparing himself mentally for the next step.
@self:Looks good so far.  Lance should have the firewall down hopefully a bit before G’Eye pops out onto the street, and LeO should be around the corner just after that.  With this weather|visibility|storm, LeO might be a bit far back, but he will close quickly.  I can delay hitting the rigger just a bit, until G’Eye gets his attention.

Suddenly a door opens in the firewall from Lance’s prodding, and Sprogget is in the drones node.  A cockpit for a steampunk aircraft.  Tacnet updates to show the drone shield has been penetrated, with an alert pending.  Releasing Lance back to the resonance, Sprogget quickly forges a new tool that he has been holding ready in his head.  It seems that he is really ready to make this tool.  Again the sprite icon is similar to G’Eye, but now the active sensor system has been turned into a weapon to swallow the target in corrupting signals.  The coating to disguise it is still there, enhanced to provide protection as well, and the minidrone weaponry looks ready to slice into icon code.

@self:Wizzer|Aces!  Now why can’t I do that ALL the time?  That is quality!  5 tasks, and null fading.  With that sort of work, I could have gone to|done higher rated.  Well work with what I got.

@Fault Sprite:“Hoi Storm.  Got a {problem here} that needs fixing|deleting.  Protect us both with your armor, then attack|neutralize that rigger when I start. Smoother|engulf him with static|pulses|noise then continue with blackout until he is unconscious”.

Sculpting a simple blackout CF of his own, Sprogget eyes the rigger sitting in the cockpit.
Bionode: Res 4(5), Sig 2, Sys 4, FW 3; Hidden; Biofeedback Filter(4), Analyze(3), Command(1), Edit(1), Scan(1), Sniffer(3), Spoof(1), Stealth(3), Shield(1), Tacsoft(2), Simrig(1), Blackout(2)
@self:My attack is about as good as what Storm can do, when I am not tired.  Attacking first should make it easier for him to get through, then once engulfed, the rigger will be at a disadvantage for both.

Just as G’Eye bursts onto the street from the side, hopefully taking the riggers attention, Sprogget is startled to realize that the rigger is a TM.
@self:A matrix signature?  What would a TM be doing with the Spined Drakes?
Putting that aside for later, he launches his initial attack, triggering the sprite to follow suit.

Your sprite deftly slips through the speeding drone’s firewall and sends the route back to you so that you appear inside the node beside it. The rigger at first is hard to see until you realise he’s running stealth inside his own node…and he’s a techno to boot! Although he appears oblivious to you for now you quickly log out and back in after preparing your attacks…

The node is empty and then a hideous form pounces on your icon as you quickly raise your defences. You get a brief view of a vaguely humanoid icon made up of sucking darkness…it’s not just the sculpting, the whole thing feels wrong…Disonant! Amorphous claws rake at you and you can feel the bleeding attack code that scrabbles at you and worms around your shield form…

As you desperately evade the Disonant’s first attack your sprite tries to engulf him in signal noise. The screech of code echoes through the node but the amorphous form of your foe is difficult to pin down and you begin to have a sinking feeling that he is better at this kind of thing than you are…your focus on the mechanical flesh has left you wanting in the realms of digital combat, let’s hope his focus has similarly limited him in the real world otherwise this could be a short fight…

You can almost feel his smile as his icon nonchalantly turns away from you to focus on your sprite. You feel the lash of his attack as he pumps corrupting code into your companion’s form. It wavers but is resolute under the onslaught. It allows you to slip past his shield and he winces but looks far from devastated by your blow.

Peripherally you note that the two gangers that were pursuing the rotadrone have suddenly turned tail and are running back towards their bikes. Your fairly sure the Disonant hasn’t warned them so something else must be going on…

@self:Well {surprise|pleasure|astonishment}!  I actually connected with that attack.  Unfortunately, Storm did not.

I don't have the skill to take on this dissonant in the matrix.  The only real chance was Storm wrapping him up quickly by surprise.  That did not happen, so LeO will have to try taking the drone in physical.

Urging Storm to try again, though he is likely to take more damage, Sprogget sends a quick message to the waiting ambushers.
@Drakehunters[Sprogget]: <<Weapons free, LeO targeting drone.>>

Tagging the drone as an active threat:full in tacnet for LeO's attention, Sprogget logs off from the drone, dropping the not so helpful Blackout complex form.

@self:Need to take the drone out fast.  We don't have time to find out what it is capable of.  A full burst should take it apart, then maybe I can locate that Dissonant in meat space, if he is nearby, while he is reeling from the dumpshock.

Sprogget

Sensing that the tide has turned you make a show of being booted off the node and you have a moment to feel the triumphant grin of the dissonant and relish what is about to happen to him…the tac feed has LeO with a firm contact on the now much less erratic drone and with a roar of noise the rotadrone becomes a sparking pile of debris that slews sideways and collides with the building at the side of the street. Scattered cladding panels rain down into the street…

Crow

With Sprogget’s timely destruction of the main threat you can just about make out the gangers in the murk as they turn back to stare at what was a moment before their point man…it was a mistake they shouldn’t have made! The shot is long but no problem for your skills and the large gun you are cradling…grade A bang bang! And two bangs, barely heard over the rising wind, is enough to drop one of the two unfortunates…

The explosion beyond them lights up the sky a hellish red. It’s some five hundred meters or so from where you are and turns the Freedom mall into a stark silhouette. The estimated impact point is the western tip of the mall…whatever is happening over there is happening in earnest!

[ Spoiler ]

Leaving the roto-drone node and Dissonant TM to the tender mercies of LeO's Ares Alpha, Sprogget relocates to G’Eye, jumping in to use the full sensor suite as his own eyes.  G’Eye is already across the street, and between buildings again, so does not have visual line of sight, but the UWBR is good enough to build a view of the result through the walls of the shoddy construction of the intervening corner of the apartment building.  The 3D density map view of the disintegrating drone brings both satisfaction and a mental wince at the waste.
@self:That is not going to leave much for salvage.
Then savagely,
@self:I hope|want|desire that the dump made that Dissonant’s eyes bleed, and he is too dizzy to stand!

Tacnet showing one of the gangers going down from Crow’s pair of shots adds a bit of spice to the flavour of the satisfaction, as Sprogget tags the lone remaining enemy icon as "Pin only", then sends extra information to the rest of the team.
@Drakehunters[Sprogget]: <<See if you can drive that final ganger to ground in one of the buildings without killing him, or exposing yourselves.  I want to use Banjo to put a tracker on his bike, that we can use to locate their base.  Need to delay him some to do that.>>

Joined by the battered Storm, Sprogget quickly reconfigures the dog brain to use covert ops again, instead of the defense autosoft, and sets it to reverse course, to get it and its sensors back to the street at maximum speed.  He then leaves it to continue on its own, and jumps to the monocycle, instructing it to remain out of line of fire from the ganger, but to close up to the corner nearest where the other drakehunters had been waiting for the approaching gangers.

@self:Anyone paying attention knows someone is physically close to here.  Might as well stretch the sensors again.

Sprogget sends the command to re-activate the temporarily suppressed active sensors to all of the drones except for the dalmatian.

@self:I still hope Banjo is going|stays unnoticed.  I still want to add a tracker to those bikes before that remaining ganger gets back.  IF he gets back.

If that twisted bozo was rigging from nearby, maybe I can find him|his node|his location after that using the sensor mesh.  I got a good look at the id|signature when I hit (well touched) him with the Blackout.  If I get to a node physically close enough to him, and look hard enough, I have a chance to find his bio node and meat.  Even if the cameras can not see him.

The flash, reported through tacnet by all vision sensors, and then the sound of the new explosion through audio, is not near as welcome as the destruction of the drone, and the dropping of the ganger.

G’Eye’s location does not provide a view toward the source, but the flash is bright enough to bounce off of buildings, and brighten the walls around him, at least to his low light camera.  The monocycle’s visual sensor are not as good, and there is no wall in the right place to reflect the light, so DR gets a bare flicker.  The goggles that Sprogget is wearing, that are tied into the monocycle’s sensors, and hence the tacnet, are better, and get a bit more.  Banjo gets a momentary bit of extra light while searching the area around the gangers bikes with his senses for hidden threats.  The NLJD probing the bikes themselves is not effected.  LeO gets the best view.  His cameras are pointed due north, having just been used to help target the roto-drone, and were looking almost directly in the direction of the flash.  They showed a momentary fuzzy silhouette of the hill across 39Ave before the rain dropped visibility again.  Then the sound.  Banjo picks it up first just over a second after the flash, followed by G’Eye, then Crow and Scrapheap’s PANs, LeO, and DR a fraction later.  Most of the audio sensors have spatial recognizer capabilities, each of which attempts to localize the source.  With the distance, and multiple path echoes, they are minimally successful, mostly indicating 'some place north'.  Tacnet though combines the flash, and varying delays for the sound to reach the known locations of the audio sensors to narrow the uncertainty of the possible location significantly.

@self:What!?  That was another explosion|concussion, not this storm!  Tac shows the origin as likely at|close to the west end of the mall.  This bunch likes to make things go boom WAY too much.

Wait a nano.  Those 2 on foot took off after I|Storm|we initially infiltrated|attacked the roto-drone node, but I did not notice anything to show that the Dissonant had a chance to warn them.  Plus, they stopped an instant to rubberneck when LeO turned the drone into scrap|confetti.  They were not aware of us until then!  Something else called them just before the explosion.  Seems likely|reasonable those are related, implying that the explosion was not planned in advance, but that they had a little warning.

Where tac puts that explosion is WELL within the area where the mesh is supposed to be still solid.  The sensor mesh is compromised?  The dissonant?  In a minute already!  Need to do that tracker soonest!

Jumping to, and into, Banjo, Sprogget examines the gangers bikes for the best locations to put a small stealthed sensor, where it will not be found without a careful search, or a scanner that is not casually available.  Keeping an eye on the tacnet feed, as well as the local environment as reported by his senses, he reaches into his chest storage compartment for the needed materials while updating the team on things they would not have seen from their perspective.

@Drakehunters[Sprogget]: <<There was a Dissonant TM rigging that drone.  Think of that like the matrix equivalent of a toxic mage.  He seriously walks the dark side.  I could not handle him directly, so had to get LeO to take out the drone physically.  Symptoms also indicate that the tribal security sensor network may have been comprised, in addition to the parts destroyed.  Dissonant abilities could account for that, even with Fre∑dom managing.  I'll reported that to tribal security offices when I get a couple extra seconds.  When they know what to look for, the sensors might start giving better information.

Scrapheap, what you got from that drake so far?  You might want to ask about where their matrix support is coming from too

September 1, 2072 22:xx, Outside the Fre∑dom mall, Puyallup

Scrapheap crouched down to the wounded teenager's level as Crow opened up with the assault rifle on the fleeing orks. "Time to talk, shithead. I want to know what you fuckwit Drakes thought–"

The kid interrupted the sort-of interrogation, his face contorted in anger and pain from his bullet-ridden limb. “I don’t know shit! These three weird guys said they’d help us get back our turf, sold us some bang bang and told us how to hurt those bastards! Take what’s ours and we’ll take it back, scan? You fuck me up it ain’t gonna do nuffin, nobody cares right? But I can help you yeah? Put a word in with da boss…meybe ask that he leaves the mechs be? We got on alrit until those hacker freaks turned up!” He trailed off, trying to look as convincing as he could be.

Scrapheap set his face like he was considering the offer, then backhanded the kid across the face, bouncing his head off of the pavement.

"Le's get one thing straight, breeder. You ain't got nothin' to bargain with 'cept maybe your worthless life. You wanna walk away from this, you tell me more about those 'weird guys' who sold you the toys…including the 'trix cover I know you Drakes can't do on your own. Oh, and mebbe keep your opinions about the 'trix tribe to yourself. Makin' me madder just means yer more likely to be devil rat chow." The scarred ork flexed his knuckles on the hand that had just smacked the boy.

Michiko's discrete throat clearing brought the Baron up from his info-dive, dozens of windows winking out of existence with a thought. He disconnected the cable from his front datajack that led to his Fairlight commlink as Laurence took a step forward and slightly in front of his employer. One of the Knights grinned almost rudely at the chauffeur, while the other paid not the slightest hint of attention to him.

"That will be good, Mr.Powell. Please have a seat." Baron Herbert rose to his feet and bowed over Ryl's hand. "Good afternoon, Lady deBathayre. Thank you for agreeing to meet with us on such short notice."

Not wasting any time, but still being careful to do a good job, Sprogget fastens the selected sensors to the bikes, where they are not likely to be noticed except by a mechanic doing a complete servicing.  Listening to the questioning of the bomber, he interjects,
@Drakehunters[Sprogget]: <<If that trash classes Fre∑dom as 'hacker freaks', I wonder where that puts the dissonant that was rigging the drone?  Weird guy maybe?

Ask about body count too.  There seem to be too many soldiers involved to be just the Spined Drakes actives
.>>

As each sensor is secured, it gets a quick spray of 'weathering' paint to match the color and texture of the surrounding bike, the edges feathered so there is no sharp change to notice, and no regular outline for the new paint either.  Examining the result critically with the camera on the mechanical arm, Sprogget thinks,

@self:Good enough.  No time|need to do a full artistic disguise color blending, but this is not going to be examined by an art critic|buyer either.  Good thing these sensors are intended to be placed in any weather though.  One last test.

Putting the glue and paint containers back in their clips in the storage compartment, Sprogget sends the codes to the each of the linked stealth tags, verifying that each of the sensors can be turned on and off.

@self:Good|functional!  No radio signal scanner is going to find|notice|flag those, except when they are actually turned on.  UWBR could see|perceive them, but it would need a mechanic familiar with the bikes to realize that they do not belong.  Pretty much the same for a NLJD.  Lots of other nearby expected ’tronics to confuse things, unless the user knows a lot about bikes, or knows what to look for.  Turning the sensors on for short times occasionally, and tracking their location, will allow finding out where the bikes go.  They will not pick up anything but engine noise while travelling, but can still be used for tracing, to find out where they are.  Could not get a really good camera angle, and keep them well hidden.  Only have a view of the road below, and feet of people standing next to the bike, but that is not really important here|this purpose.

Finished with the installation and disguise, Sprogget sets up instructions to get Banjo quickly clear of the bike and returning ganger, follow the reverse of the path it used to get here, and rejoin the the rest of the team.  Turning control over to the dog brain, pauses another moment in the node to compose a status update.  Tagging the message as status, new information, Sprogget encrypts and sends the message to the people coordinating the Mechanicals and Fre∑dom security efforts.

@Cam,Nimbus[Sprogget], <<Dissonant TM rigged roto-drone encountered {coordinates, time}.  Drone destroyed, one bomber captured, 2 more gangers dead.  Bomber found to be carrying mil-surplus radio without commlink.  Weapons with smartlink, skinlink and no wifi access, match configuration previously reported.  Bomber claims minimal knowledge: "three weird guys; sold weapons; told how to attack Fre∑dom", tentatively assuming last was about wireless security.

Latest explosion right at end of mall, could indicate that the sensor network that still exists has been [in part] subverted (to get that close).  Propose bringing bomber to Mechanicals security for 'further' questioning.  Serious leg damage, not too mobile.

You get the equivalent of a blank tone from the attempt to contact Nimbus, that jamming must be more effective than you thought. Cam gets back to you straight away and his words don’t exactly fill you with confidence…

@Sprogget [Cam] <<Ok, thanks for the update. All hell seems to be breaking loose near the mall. We’ve lost comms with them again and I don’t think it was voluntary this time. There’s a load of noise up there which we can’t break through. I’m routing some people towards the western end of the mall where that explosion was but I’m reluctant to let anyone get too close – there’s a fragging war going on out there and nobody asked us to sign-up! Sometimes you need to look after family before friends! If you want to head up there it’s fine by me but don’t expect me to explain things to your sister if you come home in a bag!>>

“I can tell you bout the soldier boys right? Gotta be worth sumfin? Dey works wiv the weird ones, got all sortsa shit to play wiv…says de’s gonna fuck up the hacker freaks good. Dunno where dey came frum, Fort Lewis is soldier boy turf right?”

<<@DrakeHunters [Crow] : I have the shot, target is retreating for exfiltration >>

It comes easier now, months of doing nothing but going to ground with the occasional angry confrontation over a morsel of food had numbed his senses
But now, within seconds of the adrenalin flooding his sytem, reflexes and muscle memory he had thought long forgotten reassert themselves instantly.

<<@DrakeHunters [Crow] : Waiting on you, Sprogget, are we taking him out? >>

His breathing is slow and measured, the red dot in the scope rises and falls with each cycle of inhalation and exhalation, falling perfectly between the shoulder blades of the retreating ganger in it's traversal of his spine ready for the trigger to release pinpoint death.

Behind him, almost in another parallel world the big Ork talks to the teen ganger, the muffled thump of knuckles on cheek bone barely noticed as if in a dream, there but not there, focus purely on the target.

"Jack, keep those beady eyes on the landscape brother, not even a mouse should be moving out there now !"
the mental command sent, he holds the moment, awaiting the command to fire.

The message failing to reach Fre∑dom gets the hairs on the back of Sprogget’s neck standing on end.
@self:What would it take to take Nimbus totally offline at a time like this?
Digging into the communication logs, and low level protocol handshaking, he discovers:
<<Node unreachable.
No route to node.
Node out of range.
>>
@self:Unreachable!?
Interfacing with Banjo’s sensors, without interfering with their use by the dog brain to navigate it’s path back to the where the meat part of the team is currently letting the final ganger escape, Sprogget focuses the radio signal scanner in the direction of the mall.  He has trouble believing what the scanner is showing him.
@self:A large chunk of the mall and areas close to it are under a blanket of noise?  How?

Sprogget is distracted from that by Cam’s quick response to the half of the message that did get through.
@Sprogget [Cam] :<<Ok, thanks for the update.  All hell seems to be breaking loose near the mall.>>
@self:That’s for sure!
@Sprogget [Cam] :<<We’ve lost comms with them again and I don’t think it was voluntary this time.  There’s a load of noise up there which we can’t break through.>>
@self:I saw it, but what could cause it?
@Sprogget [Cam] :<<I’m routing some people towards the western end of the mall where that explosion was but I’m reluctant to let anyone get too close – there’s a fragging war going on out there and nobody asked us to sign-up!  Sometimes you need to look after family before friends!  If you want to head up there it’s fine by me but don’t expect me to explain things to your sister if you come home in a bag!>>
@Cam[Sprogget]: <<I’d rather talk to sis directly myself.  I might have a better view of that noise from here than you do.  I was just looking at it with a radio signal scanner.  Here {Radio Signal Scanner data capture}.

Our team here is equipped for a recon, with enough firepower to take on some of the roving patrols seen before, not get in the middle of a pitched battle!  However, I do have a couple of drones on site with good sensors, and some stealth abilities.  I can send those to see some of what is going on.  Looks to me like Fre∑dom has lost control and access to significant chunks of their sensor network without realizing it had happened.  That takes some serious hot decking skills.  Combined with the Dissonant I ran into here, and …

Hearing the kid’s comment about soldier boys over Scrapheap’s tacnet feed, Sprogget thinks,
@self:Soldier boys?  Military? Para-Military?  Corp commando team?.

@Cam[Sprogget]: <<Drek!!  That captured bomber kid just made a comment about 'soldier boys' working with the 'weird ones' and having significant gear.  Says he don’t know where they come from, but thinks Fort Lewis, since that is where soldiers are based.  Whether this group is real military, or some mercenary group, that is going to be serious fire power, and people that probably know how to organize and use it!  I’m thinking that those weird ones he mentions are Dissonants.>>

Thinking frantically about the implications, and what he has learned about the events around the Mechanicals and Fre∑dom holdings this evening, he comes to seriously disturbing conclusions.
@self:The Spined Drakes were only cannon fodder.  A distraction while some other quite well organized group prepared their move.

Doing his best to force all fear or emotion out of his voice, Sprogget continues,
@Cam[Sprogget]: <<I really hope you have information to contradict my reasoning here.  To summarize what I think I know.

Some time after 20:00, less than 3 hours ago, when my group headed north to do a job for Prospero, a Fre∑dom supply shipment from Fort Lewis got hit by a group of Spined Drakes.  Nearly simultaneously, multiple small groups of Spined Drakes showed up doing hit and run against both Fre∑dom and Mechanicals people, as well as physically taking out chunks of both sensor networks.  There seem to be more Spined Drakes than there should be with existing knowledge of the gang.  They have been much better equipped than they should be, with that AK as an example, and the mil-surplus comm gear I saw here.  Their matrix procedures have been much better than they should know how to do, designed to work against people with good matrix skills.  The hits against sensor infrastructure have been way too accurate, implying knowledge and planning that should be beyond Spined Drake abilities.  The primary target seems to be Fre∑dom, with just enough extra to make it difficult for us to provide support.  Now I get a reference to possible military grade people and equipment targeting Fre∑dom, working with, or maybe for *weird ones*, just after I had an encounter with a dissonant TM.  That latest explosion at the west end of the mall was in an area that was still well covered by supposedly active sensor mesh.  I also just sent you a record of what a scanner is seeing in wireless over there.

I have been having trouble visualizing what it would take to blanket an area like that to wireless.  A jammer is a point source, or maybe a directional cone, but the blocking falls off fast with distance.  This is covering too much area.

Possible scenario, please give me a reason that it is impossible, or at least unlikely.  Some group with significant financial resources has targeted Fre∑dom for their own reasons.  Possibly they want the TM’s like before.  They either have access to military grade resources themselves, or hired them.  They are supplying enough resources to outfit the Spined drakes with good quality printed smart linked weapons, and military surplus radio gear.  They did that, then sic'd them on Fre∑dom, with the excuse of getting their old turf back.  They also provided advisers and intel to make the Spined Drakes more effective at creating confusion, and disruption of activities.  They also probably beefed up the Spined Drake effectives count with their own people in some places.  Disguised as gangers, so no one has noticed yet.  The imported tactics were effective enough that no one got to take a close look at the opposition.  At least until we managed to turn the tables on that ambush north of the mall, where we discovered a little about the gear being used.  I suspect that particular group did not have any advisor with them, though they did have a mage.

The whole thing with the Spined Drakes was simply intended as a distraction.  They were equipped with a lot of gear, just to be noisy and provide a focus of attention while the real attack was going off quietly.  While attention was on the physically disrupted sections of the security sensor mesh, the active section was subverted, and they walked right up to the mall undetected.  After that explosion, they are blanketing a large chunk of the mall, including where Nimbus and the operations centre should be, with a solid no wireless zone.  Strong enough that we have no communications out of there, even though most of them should have good ECCM.  The only way I see to do that, is a large number of high powered jammers spread across the whole area.  The scanner data plus soldier reference finally make me remember something about matrix tactics on the battle field.  Disperse a bunch of jammers, usually as bomblets, like shrapnel from a larger bomb, to try to deny the opposition wireless communication.  A LOT of high powered jammers, and that is not cheap.  Someone is throwing money at this effort.  I'll bet that Fre∑dom has some old wired matrix connection setup.  I'll also bet that wired connection is not working right now.  I don't supposed you are supposed to have a backup laser link to the mall?  If you do it is down, and the storm dropping visibility is not the only reason.

Unless you have something solid that says that is so much solar wind, I have some orders to give, if I were in your shoes.
1. Don't let any mechanicals people near the west end of the mall, unless they are prepared to take on a military grade squad, or citimaster equivalent.
2. Find someone with military background, and get them in contact with Scrapheap, who is sitting on that bomber.  Get the right questions to narrow down what 'soldier boys' really means.
3. Get everyone with enough skills started on doing a full security audit of all of our matrix security and sensor mesh.  Plan on completely wiping and replacing all account access.  The systems could have been hacked, but it is also possible they managed to acquire valid credentials some way.  That is going to be some work, and take time, but given the opposition resources seen, I think it is the only way to get back to a relatively secure matrix environment.  I recommend taking over any of the accessible Fre∑dom assets as well.  Looks like they have lost access and control of it anyway, and it is possibly being used by the attackers
.>>

@self:That is going to be on my assigned list, but only after I get some rest.

@Cam[Sprogget]: <<4. Get one of the mages, to send a spirit over there for quick astral recon.  If they have the resources I think they do, that spirit will get swatted fast when it gets close.  Provide extra magical support for the mage at our end, in case they are persistent enough to follow the link back the mage.
5. Send another spirit the long way around, to another inhabited part of the mall, and try to make contact with Fre∑dom members to pass the word.  KEEP passing the word until that spirit gets hit too.  Hopefully coming in away from the combat zone, it can get past, at least for awhile.  They can't be everywhere at once.  Spring is over there in that mess some place
.>>

@self:One of those could be Osha and a plant spirit, but she better have backup.

@Cam[Sprogget]: <<Use the sensor mesh, but do not trust it.  Assume that all of your matrix, wired, or wireless communications is open, even if encrypted like this is.>>
@self:I am not going to mention the tracer on the bike here, just in case the security is compromised that badly.
Allowing some emotion back into his voice, he finishes with
@Cam[Sprogget]: <<So please tell me I fried my brain.>>

Waiting for Cam to explode, laugh, or start swearing, Sprogget has another thought,
@self:Crow had sort of a military bearing, and the wording of that last query for authorization sounded military based.
@Drakehunters[Sprogget]: <<Crow, what is your background?  Military?  Do you think you could ask the right questions to find out what that little breeder means by 'soldier boys'?  I have just had a horrible chain of reasoning that leads to that latest explosion back near the mall being a military grade and equipped group funded by someone willing to equip and support the Spined Drakes as no more than a distraction to the real hit on the Fre∑dom tribe and mall.>>

Two shots ring out down range and the puff of cordite catches in Crows nostrils,
@Drakehunters [Crow] << yeah, I was Mil-Spec... Once>>

The admission, now spoken out loud fills his mind with memories that he thought were buried deeper, glad for the distance between him and the others here, that disguises the emotion catching in his throat.
@Drakehunters [Crow] << You think, these lot have somethin' worth all this time, effort and hardware? Frag, if I wasn't so damn hungry I'd start runnin' now!.... That's a joke Scrap, don't kill me just yet 'kay >>

Using the humour to pound back the memories before they overwhelm him, he drops the rifle into it's sling and steps over to the supine Ork teen. Speaking quietly and matter of factly, like a father talking calmly to his kid with a skinned elbow.

"Been making friends and playing toy soldiers huh kid? Damn shame for you, we aint got room for no prisoners of war and I ain't got the stomach for just killing you neither, so, whats a guy to do?"

Crow drops to a squat and clutches the kids leg just at the wounded portion,
calmly but gripping strong enough to bring a silent scream to the kids eyes, he continues speaking but his tone calm but with a subtle hint of threat
"You need a medic? That looks like it might get infected... You ever see a guy with infected wounds? Seems all his friends suddenly don't wanna be around him no more, gets real hard to feed himself ... they just leave him to crawl and rot out here... Then the crows get real brave, it's the eyes ya see, they love eating eyes first!
You don't look so good kid, you need a medic?"

Letting go of the damaged leg he levels his gaze at the departing ganger with his jaw set determined.
"When did they come? Who bought the gear? Where are they at?"
