I know at some point someone has to have asked this question, but in the event they haven't, I'm going to.
Has there ever been, or in the future will there be, a Shadowrun expansion book that goes into detail about the various branches of the military for the major governments of the world? I'm sure there must be somewhere, but for the life of me I can't seem to find it in any of the books that I currently have. what I'm really interested in is primarily structural info, particularly for mages and deckers. I know the core rulebooks have a brief little blurb about it, but other than that I can't find much. |

Isn't there something like this in the pipeline, under the working name of War?

I haven't really found much info on this either. I was trying to make a character once who was an ex-Navy Seal, but couldn't really find info for the UCAS navy, where they have bases, what's different about it as compared to today's navy, etc... Pretty much had to BS the whole thing. I would love if this "War" book is coming soon, provided it exists (I haven't hear much about it).

If there was, and there were people working on it now, and those people read Dumpshock, you could probably post a wish list and see if it gets in there. By the same token, if there was, and there were people working on it now, and those people read Dumpshock, you could post everything you could possibly think of that has anything to do with the military in Shadowrun and then loudly complain that you thought of it first and the writers are ripping off your ideas once the book hits print. Hm ... on that note ... Drop bear bombardments! Power armor! Tanks that convert to jet fighters! Sharks with frickin' lasers! Undead armies! Magical bullets! Drones that join together to form a mega-drone! There, now those ideas are all mine. =i) |

The old Fields of Fire sourcebook covered mercenary operations, and introduced a lot of the heavier weapons to SR2 that have since become fairly standard. It also has a few light armored vehicles in there as well. Waaay out of date, but probably the closest thing out there.
The Cyberpirates sourcebook also had a bunch of rules and information for dealing with Naval combat, which (typically) is the domain of the big corps and nation states. It has things in it like stats for aircraft carriers and attack submarines. Beyond that the stuff related to actual militaries is in minor comments in other sourcebooks and comments in novels. There isn't much milspec vehilce hardware statted out, and nothing like TO&E has ever been published. A recent thread had the discussion of how well equipped regular army forces are vs. a Shadowrun team - but with nothing "canon" it's all just speculation and there is a lot of disagreement. Fields of Fire (which is set in 2055) says that mages are typically used in special operations, recon and defensive rolls. Their numbers are too limited to be particularly effective as attack forces except in special circumstances. The author also notes that he expects that to change in the future, so by 2072...who knows? Hacking was a very different beast before 4th edition, so I don't think you'll find all that much that is applicable anymore. |

There was a announcment of just such a book and it is called WAR! The cover work was released on Catalysts website so you should be able to find it with a little looking. No release date as far as I am aware of though.

If I remember correctly, there was also something on the little handout they gave at the Catalyst booth at GenCon - I forget the exact name but one of the products was about MilSpec stuff and military-related things. Of course, I could be completely wrong...

Considering how Fort Lewis sits right in the middle of Seattle, I've always been surprised at how little attention was given to the UCAS military's TO&E and how it related to the military in Seattle. Lots of general info about the region, but not a lot on how they respond to runners with regards to gear and manpower.

Not to mention the Supercarrier Group that's in the Harbour.
My group has already commented about stealing a fighter jet... Until I pointed out that they'd have to deal with the UCAS Marine Corps. |

I know I'd like to see the old Stonewall tank from Rigger 1 finally put in.
I'd also love to see the return of the Aztechnology Lobo as well as its "Relampago" railgun In addition to more ships. USS Powell wasnt it? |

That's the wrong cover, yeah, but it does still have the little blurb on War, at least.
And also, I wouldn't necessarily expect "Fields of Fire, 2.0" from it. Going by that little blurb, it looks more like a setting/scenario/adventure type pack, dealing very specifically with the situation in South America. I'm sure others know more details, but it reads to me like it won't necessarily be chock full of universal military "rules." |

The best info on Magic in the Military I've found is in the Seattle Sourcebook's section on the Joint Task force and the Metroplex Guard.
QUOTE > It’s worth noting that JTFS also massively outguns the Metroplex Guard in terms
of magical resources. Before the Renraku crisis, the Guard had exactly four magicians, one for each combat battalion and one assigned to the command regiment. The Task Force has easily ten times that number, including some specialforces magicians and adepts who make the Guard magickers look like toddlers playing with “Age of Atlantis™” AR toys. > Ethernaut |

War. huh-yeah. What is it good for? Absolutely nothin! Except for ending slavery, nazism, fascism, communism of course. And the ethnic cleansing in ex-Jugoslavia, and freeing Kuwait, and that Afghanistan is no longer ruled by Taleban. Too bad about war missing the genocides in Rwanda and Darfur. |

Too bad about war missing the genocides in Rwanda and Darfur. The song lyrics were ok, humorous, if off topic.. This bit is is against the TOS and very likely to derail a thread and get warnings bandied about. |
