Melissa Truman didn't escape with her family because more likely than not, she was trying to seek vengeance for the death of her brother.

If you read burning bright and observe the time-table carefully, Kyle was in the bathroom showering while telling the blondhead Truman assistant all his findings till then including his encounter with Linda Hayward.

Then he proceeded to the KE ambush where the entire KE division got whacked by the bugs.

In the mean time, that blondhead Truman must have returned to Truman Towers and told the Truman family the most up-to-date findings by Kyle. Melissa was there and the guilt and anger at the realization that she turned her brother over to a Mantid Spirit must have consumed her.

That's why she disappeared into Bug City. Cos she wanted vengeance on Linda.
