I have never played an rpg before, the only experience with Shadowrun I have is the shooter for the X-Box 360. I've looked into this game and I would like to play the pen and paper version, the theme is a dream for me. So if anyone here is willing to take me under their wing, and give me a primer for this game I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you ahead of time.

There are tons of experienced people around here but as of right now I got some time to kill, watcha want to know exactly? A few questions.

Do you have the books in any form?

Do you have a group and if not do you think you could find one?

Your in an alley, a homeless elf tries to mug you, what do you do?

I have no group yet, but its quite possible I can find one.
A homeless elf attacks, easy, stick a shiv in it.

the only experience with Shadowrun I have is the shooter for the X-Box 360.

In other words none. The 360 game was the most unfaithful port of a game I've seen in years. Teleportation and resurrection are impossible in the pnp RPG or at least beyond any PCs means. The timeline in the game is also wierd to say the least. The only thing really close is the races and the tech and that's not perfect. The latest game wasn't really shadowrun at all.

The gliders were actually pretty cool. I approved of those.

If you know of any local gaming stores it may be a good idea to look there. Pen and Paper games and Meet up are both decent sites to try and find a group. Obsidian portal can help as well but it can be pretty hit and miss.

Yes, shiv is the right answer. I also would have accepted shot, lightening bolted, and hacked his old cybereyes and forced them to shut down. Talking him out of it is also good but not my style.

Whats next? Well reading the books is a good start.

Core book first of course, look for the version with this cover just to be absolutely sure.

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http:/...um=1&itbs=1

After that Arsenal is good because everyone has a need for more weapons, vehicles, and the martial arts are pretty cool. Augmentation or Street Magic next. Aug if you have a lot of mundanes or are more interested in implants. Street magic if you like magic of course. Unwired is for the matrix and Technomancers become a lot more useful with some stuff from the book. Unwired also has stuff that makes the matrix needlessly complicated so it's best to pick and choose what you like/want. Then there's Runners Companion. This gives you new qualities and races to play.

The order you get it will probably be determined by what you make more use of. Whatever order you choose to get them in I think Runners Companion is kind of in an odd space. It gives new options to everybody but not everyone will make use of the new races (qualities might get a lot of attention though) but at the same time there is some stuff in there that could have been written better. It really depends on you of course.

How bad would it be to start playing in a play by post? And where should I look to for Fiction to get more of the worlds background.

Play by post ain't bad, I've done it before so don't worry about it. Fiction? Well the core book has good amounts of fiction and each chapter in the book has a bit of fiction in the beginning as well. If you want full blown stories I know there are some good fan fics around here but I don't know their urls.

So I should try play by post? Cause right now that seems like my most viable option until I can get a group built up. Most people I know that play PnP only play DnD

Go ahead, nothing wrong with it. You can always try to form a group in the future.

I'm going to try and form a group with the next few months or so. Forming a group at this point in my semester will kill me.

Now how do I go about getting in to a play by post, especially one that is new user friendly?
?

Yeah, many folks who play the Shadowrun roleplaying game actively loathe the FPS shooter that Microsoft put out.

Easiest way to learn roleplaying games is finding and joining an existing gaming group in your area. All the typed explanations in the world aren't as good as sitting down with other folks and just experiences it.

They also have a subforum here called Welcome to the Shadows, which has play by post games. Hang out there long enough, and a recruitment thread should pop up. As a rule, there will usually be a thread soliciting players for the game. There, people will express their interest in the game, post characters for review, and otherwise prepare for the game. When the game goes up, there will usually be two new threads. One, the IC thread, will be for posting your character's actions in the game. The other, the OOC thread, will be for making dice rolls and asking questions.

Play by post is actually a very good way to learn the rules. You're only posting once a day or so, so if you need to stop and look up the combat rules for ten minutes before you describe your character shooting someone, you're not holding anyone up. And any questions can go up in the OOC thread.

Very Bad
It doesn't give a Fraction of the Fun you'll have with a Tabletop Pen & Paper Round.
First you should Read what is Pen& Paper in General, than go to your FLGS (Fine little Gaming Shop)
ask the Clerk about Pen&Paper Rounds. In Germany we usually have a Blackboard for Want-Ads or
we go to RPG Conventions.Luckily I live in NRW (Rhine-Ruhr-Plex, 50 Klicks away from Lofwyr
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/grinbig.gif) ) which is the Center of RPG in Germany.
I'd strongly advise you to go and get a Pen&Paper Round and start playing with live People. AND NEVER,EVER Play D&D4 !! !! !! (D&D3.x or Paizos Pathfinder might be OK though)

Playing by Post and playing Tabletop Pen& Paper ist like reading in the Press about a Sex Scandal and having sex with the most beautifull and passionate Woman

with a Live Dance

Please don't !!
Shadowrun 4 ist NOT Cyberpunk.(SR stopped being Cyberpunk at SR2 )
Shure it has Elements of Cyberpunk,But it's a dystopia at Heart !!
IT's ok to watch Movies like Robocop and Johnny Mnemonic, but Minority Report or I Robot are more appropriate to get in the Mood for SR.The new SR4World is slightly different from the older SR2&3 Worlds (advanced technology f.E.)
I would also like to advise the SR Novels ,but (sadly) only the old Novels are worth reading(ImO) and they don't reflect the SR World completely. But they're a much better start to get in the Mood than Neuromancer. The Author(Wiliam Gibson) hated SR .
Gibsons Novels and SR ....it's something like....Kurosawa Movies and Lord of the Rings Extended DVDs
