I've got a notion for a shadowrunner who is an ex-coroner, but I'm having trouble coming up with a cool handle. Any ideas?
Also, I wouldn't mind suggestions as to how to make this character useful in the shadows, aside from her medical skills. |

removing corpses, medical information, drug supplies, medical contacts, a good get away vehicle (some sort of herse or medical vehicle).
Could have good blade skills, or maybe make them a drone rigger (perhaps they used drones to do the autopsies or to assist) Oh and for the handle, anything cheesily ghoulish could be good. Re-animator, Frankenstien, doc chop, necro |

For flavor I'd shoot for the whole CSI thing. Meaning amped up perception, probalby with various enhancements, and see what you can come up with for investigatory stuff, and use contacts (or drop the cash) to get access to the fancy equipment. The only trick here being that mages have some advantages over mundanes here. (if your character is a mage, this all starts working together). In any case you might want to talk with your GM about it.
However whatever they say, do tack on significant combat capabilities so you're functional if that's what the game has a lot of. If your char is a mage they'd already have them on tap essentially. If a mundane, maybe when she realized she'd have to leave the comfy life for the shadows she dumped her life savings on cyber. |

Elvira only works if she's busty. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/spin.gif)
As for how to make her useful, Forensic Science is a damned useful skill in preventing evidence from ever being at the scene to begin with at all! As well, she'd have experience with "War Stories" from her occupation that would make for some great ways to deal with resistant people. "I once opened a man that had broken his left arm at least five dozen times. Turns out, he was abused as a kid... I wonder how that would look on an adult..." Finally, knowledge of the other Coroners that work in Seattle by reputation. "Don't dump the body here, Doctor Dravers is relentless when it comes to tracking down Humanis-Related corpses. Dump him five blocks over, that's another district and Doctor Handers is a Elf, he would care less about a guy with Humanis tattoos than he would about all the other cases he has." |

Perhaps when harvesting some cybereyes from a cadaver (there's a market for second-hand cyberware), the coroner saw an image from a cybereye camera output: it was of a hunched over figure, silhouetted against bright surgical lights, creating a flare effect reminiscent of an angel's halo or the sun's corona. This was an image of the coroner, of course, leaning over the deceased. Perhaps that image has stuck with the character ever since (maybe even made it onto the desktop wallpaper of a pocsec or commlink) and provides reassurance that the coroner is like the chthonian Charon, a stygian guide for departed souls through the rhythm of the night.
So I suggest "Corona". (I'm sure someone else could come up with an even cornea pun.) |

That's a rather interesting thought for a character.
Give him access to the keys to the Meatwagon (coroner's vehicle) and he can intercept bodies before they can fall into the RIGHT hands. Perhaps he isn't above 'miscataloging' personal items on corpses... or corpses period. One swapped toe-tag and a hit-man becomes another meatbag headded to a pauper's plot. He COULD also be an expert cyber-snatcher too. Though usually he only does it with those who arrive dead instead of the usual Kicking and screaming. He's also a good pipeline into the cop shops. Remember Dexter? He might have been a specialist in blood but just about everyone in the precinct loved him (Always remember to bring those doughnuts). Nobdy thought twice about chatting to Dexter. You could give him some really good people skills (Even to the point of being magical) and he could chat the team out of trouble. As for a name you could call him "Mister Jester" or "Twoclowns" in rememberance of the riddlespeaking jovial Gravediggers from Hamlet, also known as The Clowns or Jesters. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gravediggers |

Oh! Another name idea for an Ex-Coroner. And this one can be used by either a male or a female.

I kinda like the sound of Charon, actually.
Don't stop on my account, though, this is all good stuff. |

Your character there is a Medical Examiner. Coroners with any medical knowledge are a rarity these days. (No really, the only requirements are that you're 18 and don't have a criminal background, and then get elected). |

Heh, if we are going to the whole Coroner as an elected official thing, the lack of medical knowledge wouldn't be too much of a problem. You see, Coroners are the only persons capable of arresting a Sheriff (as in the elected one, not a deputy). That just might be a cool trade off. But I'm thinking we are just talking about a Forensic Pathologist? |

Yeah, I was thinking forensic pathologist. Excuse my ignorance of medical criminology.
And if the PC is a Dr.: "Quincy" (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Is there a listing for a houseboat in any of the books? |

Better yet, give the character a code-name that is as obscure as possible; "Ducky" (reward yourself 5 geek-points if you understand that one).

Yeah, I was thinking forensic pathologist. Excuse my ignorance of medical criminology. Is there a listing for a houseboat in any of the books? Well, the Blohm & Voss Spitzenreiter (Arsenal, Page 111) could be easily modified into one. Although I'd probably suggest you get the GMC Outrider as it's easier to say in English. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nyahnyah.gif) Another option is a Government Surplus Morgan Cutlass (SR4A, Page 349) without the pintle-style mounts. (At least, until you put them back on.). Both would have to be modified with Amenities (Arsenal, Page 131), but that's a cheap and easy enough thing to do. You'd still have to pay for Lifestyle when it comes to docking fees, maintenance, supplies... But I like that idea as if the LS/KE is about to come knocking on the door, you can make a getaway in your own squat! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

If it helps, pathologists today are often called "vultures" or "canoe-makers" (referring to the hollowed out corpse). Where they work can be referred to as a "deli" by other employees (slicing meat).

Actually, that's funny, considering that one of the favourite places for my group to get patched up is "Sam's Surgery and Deli".
It's an actual Deli (Kosher, too! Sam was/is a Rabbi.), BTW, and not a morgue. |

Scalp(el), or Mr. Needles.
A kind of thin-looking guy who knows how to poison someone and make it look like mundane heart failure. Knows exactly how to hide the needlemarks. |
