Around here, Canadians have a reputation for politeness. Are Americans just bigger assholes, so Canadians come off as relatively more polite?

No idea. We're all just folk as far as I've been able to figure out. But I haven't exactly been all over the country.

I've seen nice, decent places. And I've seen places that are proud of their bigotry.

I think I'll let the history of Canada and it's willingness to help out in difficult situations stand on it's own. Peacekeepers, Smokejumpers, and the like (I laughed my ass off in one movie, "We're supposed to be Albertan Smokejumpers! You were supposed to work on your French!"). As well as all the homes that opened up to hold all the airlines during 9/11.

Canada has a well-deserved excellent international reputation. I'm frankly ashamed of my country's actions in the last decade.

The British helped a little. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

And, to be fair, it was in retaliation to the US Invasion.

I will say that the Canadians -I- personally have met. Have been very very nice. Save for three jerks. But three out of 50+ isn't bad.

The Russians I've met have been fun and nice too.

What?! You didn't vote for the Canadians? No one I know did either!
What is the world coming to when Canadians no longer need a US majority vote to be known as such? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grinbig.gif)

@Pepsi Jedi:

I think its more along the lines of scarification then piercings. Only because its permanent. And thats what makes it more extreme.
I've had piercings, but I decided they were stupid a while back (one got ripped out of my ear, it hurt like hell and I don't want that again. xD ) and you can't notice that I ever had any. Scarification or Sculpting (or even eyeball tattoos) are pretty much permanent, and not something you would like to wake up with after a night of tequila, you know?

I voted for Canadians. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nyahnyah.gif)

Already figured out who I'm voting for, however, I do want to let my local Member of Parliament know my personal wishes. Just one voice, but, if they're not heard...

Anyhow, we're going off the rails into "Lock this thread" levels here. How 'bout them Seadogs?

Quite right. We can't have the mounties in office now can we? Lord knows what they'd do with the country. Perhaps change its name to Canadia. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/spin.gif)

The problem is more the other 300 of them being blockheads, not the figurehead at the top.

In any case, we're getting too political again.

Maybe I should get my ears pointed, then run for President and post on this forum.

Then I'd be political AND on topic!

I live in the Northeast US. Although people up here are a bit cooler and more conserved (in a social stance), I wouldn't say we're rude... though it does depend on who you run into. Around me, if you say "hi" to someone on the street, there's a decent chance they'll ignore you. But if you ask for help, there's a pretty good chance someone will stop and give you a hand.

It's a cultural thing. A lot of Canadians are in the "Polite" category per capita due to where they live and how they live.

Ontarians are typically a bit arrogant and self-centered, unless you're talking about Toronto. As I'm from Northern Ontario, and there may be children present, I won't talk about Hogtown.

Flatlanders (The Prairie Provinces) are pretty decent people from what I've seen, although there's a lot of crazy in Alberta.

British Columbia has a reputation for being laid back and peaceable types. But it's also a place to go when you really hate the government, want to live off the grid with a huge collection of firearms, and so forth. But they rarely get out, so do they really count?

Maritimers (The East Cost Island Provinces) are decent, hard working folks. It's home of the Acadians, who can be some of the nicest people you can meet, despite their history of dealing with the English.

Newfies (Newfoundland) have to be seen to be believed. Take Irish and Scottish, drop them on a new island, and just leave them there to develop their own culture and ways. Some are still a little bitter about joining Canada.

Quebec, I have droned on and on about. if you stick to the Saint Lawrence River, mainly Montreal, you're golden for the most part. A bit snooty and arrogant, but no worse than, say, New Yorkers. Head to some of the isolated parts, and they're still gearing up for a war against the Anglos to get their country back practically. (Or literally, if rumors of the FLQ coming back are true.). Then you head into the even more isolated parts and deal with the First Nations, and, well, depends on how well you make a first impression.

All that said, small towns are still small towns, outsiders are typically seen as good visitors (Hey, MONEY!), and poor neighbors (They're not really part of us, they're "From Away".).

From a Federal Standpoint (IE: Dealing with the Canadian Government), you've got a fairly conservative, middle-of-the-road, "Let's try to keep everyone happy" attitude. With some really good friendships. The British Commonwealth and Former Members of Good Standing (India), the USA, a few other places, and so on.

Pick a fight with any of those, or worse, pick a fight with England or Canada itself... *Shakes Head* You'll find out why Canada likes everyone being happy.

And now, how about those Mountain Dragons?
