The 18 button mouse seems -really- out of place among all of the other relatively cool stuff listed there.

Agreed, and I really want those contacts, along with a decent control program. Actually I'd probably be better off with glasses with AR capabilities, I doubt you could fit cameras you'd need into contacts, besides, I already wear glasses

Especially since there's already a 17-button mouse out on the market that looks a hell of a lot cooler.

Honestly I thought the naga already had 18 buttons, which is why I thought it was so out of place.

That said I don't think I would ever use a mouse with more than 4-5 buttons. Standard two, plus two more on the side usable as shift/alt modifiers, and maybe a middle mouse button along with the scroll wheel. 17-18 buttons even when playing MMOs where you have 50-100 keybinds is just over the top.

I was thinking that game control helmet could be adapted to work with the contacts relatively easily, at least for point and click style functionality, though typing/sending messages would probably require further advancement in the technology.

Just one quick thing on Christian Kandlbauer, the guy with the bionic arms:

He's dead now. Died in a car crash, alas - slid off a rode and planted nose-first into a tree. Nobody seems to know if his bionic arms were at fault, but given that (if my memory serves) he drove a Subari WRX, it may be that he was just... you know, driving his car like it was meant to be driven. It's not like the combination of A WRX, being 22, and narrow roads hasn't killed people in the past.

Now hook it up to their Switchblade: http://www.razerzone.com/switchblade/about

And on the article itself, that phone reminds me of a actual Nokia product: https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Nokia_7280

Hey, Nokia. Make a new version of that phone with HDMI out and support for bluetooth mouse and keyboard!

My current gaming mouse only has 7 buttons but I pair it with a Nostromo N52.

Just for you, CanRay: http://kotaku.com/#!5794191/x-rebirth-...-2011/gallery/1

I've played X3: Reunion, and it was pretty cool. However, without a keyboard overlay and a paper manual it's been pretty impenetrable to me.

You could not have bought a Naga Maelstrom, since it has been delayed/canceled.

Razer Naga SE Update
For all you Naga fans out there, we have an update for you today – due to the overwhelming response we received for the Naga Molten special edition and because we’re literally already way over our heads in production capacity for the holidays, we had to make a really tough call to just focus on bringing you the Razer Naga Molten SE and the Razer Naga Epic MMO gaming mice for 2010 (not that those wouldn’t keep you busy enough as it is). We’ll keep the Naga Maelstrom SE under wraps for now as we focus on the Naga Epic and Naga Molten special edition launches.

ya I lol'ed at the mouse too, though it looks like it has an analog stick or something on the side? Dunno why you'd need that if you already have a mouse, but w/e. The bed seems kind of silly too. Not really futuristic tech, just a bunch of crap packed into a bed, rich people have been doing that shit for decades. Still, most of it seems pretty cool. Now that we have that carpet stuff, I expect legit VR in like 5 years tops! get on it gaming industry!

I think there was at least one human interface researcher that argued for such a mouse. I think the reason was that it allows the user to focus on the actions, and where they are, being taken rather then having to shift between that and a menu or similar repeatedly.

then again, i think it may have been the same guy that wanted to turn all computer interaction into one big text editor...

At work, once, I heard a dev argue that the best interface a user could have was a giant grid of buttons. Like... they really thought a huge clickable excel sheet was the best thing ever.

i could see a beancounter argue that, but a dev? Tho perhaps in that there is one button, one action.

Then again i suspect UI design is another case of asking 3 people and getting 4 responses...

Most definitely. Compounded by the fact that users are notoriously bad at telling you what they really want: they'll SAY that they want one thing, but they really want something totally different but don't know it.
