Could it be an ethnic tax? For instance, an aggressive GM might say that all characters must be Indian and that would eliminate many of the metavariants.

Nartaki are the Indian human metavariant that look like Shiva. Harumen (the dwarf monkeys) are also Indian.
Also, a tax on metavariants is a a tax on humanity! (See Christian Legal Society v. Martinez for my terrible joke) |

That would be fine, if they actually did that - you know, raised metavariant cost by, say, 5 BP across the board. But they don't.
Maybe it's a "can inspire wangst and pretentious roleplaying" tax. I mean, night ones have that "People misunderstand us because we're nocturnal" thing, oni have that "People misunderstand us because we look like demons" thing, and Xapiri Thepe have that whole "live in harmony with the forest" Avatar-like thingie going on. |
