We threw a lot of magic into the mix here. Using the stories of Anansi the Trickster Spider as one hell of a totem. Although he's a bug spirit he's not technically BAD.
The Congo basin has a tradition of Minkisi, sacred medicine prepared ritually, using sympathetic magic. With the sixth world, the awakened Ganga (healer) preparing them suddenly got powerful. Voudon has already been mentioned, don't forget the related Bokor, the necromancer. Have fun . . . (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rotate.gif) |

Uh, I somehow got the impression that Spider is not an Insect totem, but a thing apart from both Invae and non-insect totems?

The First Dawn of the Artifacts book gives some information on Lagos, a really screwed up nightmarish version of the previous city in various states of decay, run by ethnic bandit kings with technicals, thugs, and the local mojo backing them up. Add in toxic waste, disease, starvation, and every other trope out of bad hollywood movies. Then and magical problems, Mega Corp Chicanery, and the Human Trafficking to the ghul nation of Asmondo and you begin to scratch the surface of what the area is like.
And Lagos is one of the nicer cities... Africa gets no love in SR4 and makes the Redmond Barrens look downright civilized |

My Lagos has an interesting twist. People keep underestimating how freakishly powerful in magic the locals are. Mostly, because if you aren't /yay/ tall, you just don't live to be an independent adult in Lagos.

Recommended Reading: "Barrocco Tropical", José Eduardo Agualusa. A novel about political intrigue in a cyberpunk-esque Angola in 2020. Would be a nice SR setting and something beside African Hellhole and African Warzone, which until now are the only available settings for Africa in SR. Also, introduces a couple nice ideas forgiving Africa abit more prominence in the Sixth World.
