I don't have people telling me "listen to Lady Gaga/whatever; do it or have your nerd card revoked"! Being a Nerd brings with it some requirements and obligations, just like any other profession or (dis)organization. What you're suggesting is that you'd refuse to belong to any group that would have you as a member. Or you're a Hipster. And I'm pretty sure the more heavily armed members of Dumpshock are more likely to use Lady Gaga CDs as skeet than listen to the disks, but I might be mistaken. They have, however, probably watched Firefly and based their liking or not liking of it on their experiences of having watched it, rather than "Someone told me to do it because they think it's totally frigin' awesome! Thus I hate it." Speaking of: Medical Information on Chip. Some of those doctors in the bad parts of town aren't up on the latest and greatest in medical breakthroughs! Or may never have read them in the first place. Or only have a SAS First Aid Guide to help them as they remove bullets using instruments scavenged from a 20-year old Medkit sterilized with the same hooch they're drinking to steady their hands. That's because it's refusing to listen to Weird Al or Doctor Demento that gets your nerd card revoked, not Lady Gaga. Wow, I need to research Dr. Demento. I just have vague recollections of it from my young nerd-hood, I thought it was just a local college radio phenomenon, didn't realize it was such a "thing". Fish heads fish heads |

I remember when MuchMusic (The MTV of Canada) had "Weird" Al on once a year to put on the stuff that even he found strange.
Just wasn't the same with Ed the Sock... And then they stopped playing music videos like MTV did... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/frown.gif) |

And then they stopped playing music videos like MTV did... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/frown.gif) I remember when MTv first aired when I was in my upper teens (yes, I'm THAT old). I loved it until they stopped playing music. I haven't watched in (more than just momentarily) roughly 10-15 years. I've pretty much locked out MTv so my daughter can't watch <pukes> Jersey Shores. No 16 year old needs Snooki as a role model. <shakes head> wait, when did this become the social commentary board. Back to reality Who wants Orbital DK to Thor shot something? Who wants Orbital DK to be a role model? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nyahnyah.gif)
And all Orbital DK would need to do is drop a big enough crowbar out of the window. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) |

Being a Nerd brings with it some requirements and obligations, just like any other profession or (dis)organization. I got the impression it mostly involves staying in your mom's basement, consuming copious amounts of pizza and Mountain Dew, and playing make believe while arguing over the rules. Not sheepishly watching what everyone else watches, or listening what everyone else listens. What you're suggesting is that you'd refuse to belong to any group that would have you as a member. Or you're a Hipster. What I suggest is taking the hype with a grain of salt. The greater the hype, the greater the grain. Mine is about head-sized by now. Back on topic:one of the guys I used to game with had an idea that is as banal as it bright: favours are usually worth more than they cost you. So, I suspect giving the entirety of the loot to the ABC may in the end be a better idea. |
