With limitations. Also, (and I'm AFB here so mighht be mistaken) it means System can go up to 12. Which means technically AIs can go up to Rating 24 programs. Power creep works both ways. Not for AIs - their Firewall and System ratings are derived from their mental attributes, both as an average of two. |

You say "power creep" as if you can even play high-power games of Shadowrun without them being hilariously broken by mages, technomancers, and what have you.

I say "power creep" as if the design choices made up to now have resulted in a gradual rise in ability to do certain things.
Wether or not you allow that to break your games is up to you, really. |

Imagine a new supplement suggests you can now raise your attributes not to the natural max, but twice that, if you pay with karma. Is it power creep? Minding that you're never getting karma for that unless you like using systems for cases they are really not fit for, I'd say no - it just doesn't affect the power balance at all.

If anything were to be done to counteract this powercreep on the 'normal' side of software, AIs would need to have their natural maximums altered, meaning they could come out of chargen higher. After all, those milspec programs can evolve sentience too, and they don't suddenly devolve through it.

Mmm so I need to invest in some kind of timed device attached to my home node... if it doesn't get a password from myself within 24hr... it reboots the node.. that'll deal with the Nuke issue..
Thankfully I went for the pilot origin, so can jump into me plethora of drones, otherwise I would be quite gimped.. Gah... why can't any of my fellow runners have comlinks built into their bodies like everyone else... one has a monocle.. the other a hand held device... and knowing them, they'd loose them some down back alley outside of any known wifi range.. leaving me to rot till someone comes to sell me as scrap !.. Cheers for all the feedback on this, I know AI's cause quite a bit of controvesy in terms of the rules etc.. In terms of my cyber skills etc.. any good ideas / tips tricks to get the most out of programs, best way to use the skills etc |

You could always just ride in any bit of cyberware, or any electronic device, really... Sure it'd gimp you bad, but hey, when mobility is key... Alternatively, buy and upgrade one of those FlySpy drones. |

When I played an AI living in a server rack on an abandoned airfield base with anarchists, I just took a teen as 1/6 Contact - Operator (or was it a Dependent negative quality?). Anyway, my AI thought of her as the only User of his system, and always shadowed her whenever she connected to keep her from any possible harm. |

May anybody break the AI lifestyle rules down for me?
I mean, if I would buy an AI lifestyle, what would I get. Is the AI now living in the node of the house. Do I need the lifestyle to keep a bought comlink up to date. (Which is kind of silly, since there are a lot of devices costing less than 100 bucks and having a raiting of 3... |

Do I need the lifestyle to keep a bought comlink up to date. (Which is kind of silly, since there are a lot of devices costing less than 100 bucks and having a raiting of 3... The monthly cost of an AI lifestyle is an abstracted means of keeping the node in good working order, counterracting the degradation caused by the immense strain of supporting an AI. I'm AFB, but I think this is meant to represent replacement parts and restorative code (if that's even a thing) but as soon as you start asking how the replacement parts are provided and installed the AI becomes dependent on other people to a degree he probably won't appreciate at all. The whole thing is very heavily handwaved in the interests of making it function nearly exactly the same as a normal lifestyle. Anyway, what you 'get' is a stable device rating. Not keeping up the payments puts you at risk of lifestyle degradation (just like any normal lifestyle) which will result in a reduction of the device rating as the wear and tear starts to impact on performance. Now buying a lifestyle is not covered, but I would assume the intention is for it to function the same again, assuming your table thinks it shouldn't be banned. The only way of explaining it that I can think of would be some kind of lifetime guarantee arrangement. |

Well the thread has been paying dividends in terms of our game.. advice well taken and applied !
Nothing beats the expression of a over rightous TM lording it up over you, seconds before you pull the plug (metaphysically speaking) on your own hub and effectively lobotermise him with the resulting dumpshock... who's the superiour matrix entity now my dribbling friend?? |
