Back in my days, when we still had conscription in Germany, everything was provided for by the state. Guns, boots, the uniform and every piece of equipment necessary. They even threw in a welcome package, which consisted, among other things, of a razor and a pack of condoms.

Granted, you didn't actually get to keep anything (other than the consumables), and I had to pay for the commemorative lighter at the end of service. That was entirely optional, but I'm a sucker for Zippos (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
