Tusks seem to be a big artistic downfall for many artists. The rest of the art is good, but then you have these tusks that look flat and unrealistic. I semi-agree on how orks should look. I think people make them too fugly-looking sometimes (they are orks and trolls, not Gamma World mutants! Some of them look like they couldn't close their mouths without biting their own jaws off!), and I hate the pig-snout look of the cover of Augmentation (well-drawn as it is). But things like the gunslinger adept look too much like humans wearing plastic Halloween teeth. I think things like the ork street samurai from the Street Samurai Catalog, or the ork on the cover of Arsenal, strike about the right balance - built on a bigger scale, blockier foreheads and cheekbones, but still attractive by conventional standards.
Still, if someone wants a more "human-looking" ork, or an elf who doesn't look anorexic, it shouldn't be too implausible. The existence of the "human-looking" quality means that there are orks and elves who don't look that different. Obviously, they are more the exception than the rule, but they are still there. |
