I barely got started. I could rant about them for a while (and make valid points while doing it, too).

In any event: knife laws are interesting. I think it's Austin (maybe Houston) that has a law against carrying any lock-bladed knife, yet they do not have any laws against carrying the otherwise-legal sheath-bladed knives. So in effect you cannot carry a 1-inch folding knife but can walk freely with a 5.5 inch fixed knife sheathed at your hip. They had a semi-valid reason for it*, but that's silly now.

A group of thugs in about 1987 decided to hold people up by weakening the screws on their folding blades so they could flick their wrists and the knife blade would snap out and lock, similar to but not exactly like a switch blade. They used that as a method of intimidation (and it worked), so the city outlawed all folding knives. Let's ignore that criminals by definition break laws and restrict the possibility of the law-abiding citizen to live freely, and let's also ignore the illogic of outlawing 1-inch folding knives while still allowing 5.5 inch knives that require a sheath. Yeah.

how bizarre I thought everyone carried a folding or assisted opening knife.

For what, Daylen, helping out the Phoenix Foundation?

Yes, there are many stupid laws out there. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) That doesn't make having laws stupid, of course… but that's another topic.

We're seeing a lot of interesting drone activity recently. The various -Dog robots (BullDog, BigDog, etc.?), the magnetic rolling canister cambots (I think they're for the Navy/CG), any number of copter drones (spheres, quads, whatever). This is all aside from the huge military missile-drones, of course.

One thing I was thinking is that this is another area RL is going to 'inform' SR: if this little police thing can carry X weapon, what does that say about Body and weapon mounts? And so on. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I used to carry one, it was a very useful tool in High School (Shop classes.). And I've wanted to get the Swiss Army Knife/USB Memory Stick, but they were only able to get the smaller memory sizes in Winnipeg.

Bomb Disposal Drones have been around for awhile now, and are getting more reliable and complex all the time. And I've been hearing about "Support Role" Drones based on the same chassis for troops to haul their extra equipment, letting soldiers to carry just their combat load and a bit more, while the Drone carries everything else.

You don't know what a knife is used for? Cutting things. Its one of the most basic tools.

As to Body and Weapon mounts, I assume you are referring to things like a gyro. I don't think the trend in RL will change, we will have more ergonomic, better designed ammo and weapons, but I doubt there will be a resurgence in large firearms. Certainly there will be no need for huge firearms being mounted on people with contraptions to redirect recoil because the firearm is being held strangely. Instead of the big guns from Aliens being the future it looks like the ideas behind the FiveSeven will be.

That's my point: what are you needing to cut?

… No, nothing about gyros at all. I'm talking about drones, here in this drone thread. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Specifically, and this isn't a new idea, it's weird that the 'size' categories for vehicle weapon mounts are 'anything up to LMG/heavy' and 'bigger'. (Arsenal also has the category 'even bigger', I guess.)

I don't know what I might need to cut, hence the knife instead of a more specialized cutting tool. Maybe an envelope, box, seat belt, rope, wood, and in a pinch if my pistol is out of ammo I can cut a person who is threatening me.

Well I doubt there will be a Browning M2 mounted on a drone as small as the one in the article. Most likely it has a somewhat specialized mounting bracket where a shotgun like device can be attached.

I used to carry a folding spyderco knife on me at all times until I up and lost it on my job (still upset about that). Used it for all manner of things. Cutting, opening boxes, as a wedge at times, and even an improvised flat-head screwdriver on multiple occasions. A good folding knife is a damned good tool to have on you. Granted, a leatherman or similar combo tool is certainly better, so long as the quality is worth it. Course, then you miss out on the nice serrated blade for those off cases when you need it.

My Fuse-Style Leatherman was never complimented enough by my boss when I was doing Computer Field Work. That, a dollar-store flashlight, and a cellphone camera were the three tools we needed the most.

As with guns... its really only major cities that has hard rules regarding blade length, type, & how/where you may carry/wear one. In other parts of the country, not having a utility tool or a knife is heresy.

Must be Major cities up North, down south I've never come across a knife law and cities are prohibited from passing one about guns. You're right about the heresy of not having a knife.

It gets wierder. Some advocate buying a 70 dollar or more knife so one will not want to use it (and thus dull it) on a regular basis. Emergency only use. Others carry at least two knives.

Heh, yah, the $70 dollar knife is in the "expensive enough to worry about breaking it" range but not actually in the "so expensive that it's guaranteed unconditionally" range.

I usually carry four on me. A 1.5 inch buck folding, a 2 inch dollar special folding with serrations, a 3.25 inch S&W (birthday gift), and a 4.5 inch Coleman sheath. I have a 3 inch Ozark folder in my car's center console also. I feel naked when I go to work at the Airport where I'm not allowed to have any blades at all...

Thanks to the Charlie-Foxtrot that is Canadian Laws, I'm scared to carry anything unless I'm on a job, and can have a chance to convince Officer Friendly that it's a "Tool" as opposed to a "Weapon".

That might help. Or might piss the cop off enough that just seizing the blade wouldn't be enough and I get a nice ride in the back of a squad car and a long stay in an interrogation room waiting for a Lawyer (Who won't be present while I'm being questioned, BTW. I just get to talk to him BEFORE I get questioned.).

Don't expect things to work like they do in the USA if you got to any other country.

I'm probably oversensitive due to my upbringing (Hippie, Earth Child, and a Biker as parents), and being short haired and "Normal", I probably wouldn't be singled out for a "Bust the dirty $Anti-Police-Person on whatever we can" thought pattern...
