Anyone use music in their games at all? If so, what do you use for something like orksploitation? Or for any representational music of the late 21st century?

Or do you just say screw it and go with stuff you like?

I have a bunch of playlists that are arranged by feel/use (Creepy, Battle, Chase, Atmospheric, General, Clubbing, Epic, etc) that I play as background. I've actually managed to convince at least one group of newbies that I have psychic control over my iPod (I just know the music really well, and I time my responses to it).

As for what I use, I tend to avoid music with lyrics, so I don't have stuff that quite fits the descriptions of the music genres, but having rock music playing when they're in the club or something like that helps set the atmosphere.

Here's a great sample of something that I personally adore (Even if I don't speak French) ... some pretty angry rap over a techno beat, bringing a few styles together. (Lyrics start at around :28 for you 'oonce' haters. Give me at least one stanza before running away!)

Oh, and here's a live version, with, like, guitars and such.

Hard Rock, Metal of all types, Punk, some Techno to mix things up (Love Daft Punk!), and whatever else grabs my mood.

EDIT: Someday, I'll have to find some J-Pop to throw in, too.

Of course, blending sounds together gives you more music, but you can also dovetail some plots. For example, the movie Crossroads (With Ralph Maccio, not Britney Spears) gives us the Devil, selling souls for rock-n-roll, voodoo charms... magic, music, and a general atmosphere that screams Shadowrun *without* using cybernetics or computers. Seriously.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atw6F47UCYM

Horrible feed, but, you'll know the song/movie from it. Lil' Sheridan's "Dangerously" from Johnny Dangerously.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmlUde6Xm_M

Mixing it up (a LOT) you can also draw from Guys and Dolls or, really, *anything* Sinatra.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fl6MHgh1vFQ

To take you back to a future time, we get Eisenfunk's Pong.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNAdtkSjSps

If you want to go POST post modern, then we get holographic performers using trideo tech. (AI Idoru, perhaps?)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvQ-SZgdVrs

Of course, since vend-o-mat music allows almost anyone to create awesome music just for them and spin off discs (Or download them to their commlink, natch), the real performers are known to go underground, popping up to do live shows without any real technology, to showcase their skills and give fans unique treats. Unplugged, as it were.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=if9OqHL8EFU

And then there's this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzC4hFK5P3g

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTWFru4dDcY

Never say I never gave you anything, Dumpshock.

Incredibly depends on the character.

I typically try to organize my playlists by mood as much as character. Shadowrun is equal parts Left Turn At The 80's, Spy Thriller, Eletronicish, Background Noise, and Epic. Depending on the nature of the run, and the overall tone of the game.

I try not to use too much music, I find that a number of my players are entirely to easily distracted.

That in eventually Here Comes the Hotstepper (Ini Kamoze around 1991 I think) shows up and all semblance of sanity is lost.

I don;t use music in game, as it's distracting. But I use music as background noise when I write. I find it helps me focus.

Generally, I go old school, 1st edition Shadowrun. Queensryche. I wrote the entirety of one of my Missions adventures with Operation: Mindcrime on loop. These days, I have a well-trained Pandora station set up that plays primarily Queensryche and Rush, with a little bit of stuff like Iron maiden, Megadeth, and Judas priest thrown in. Gives me that classic 1st edition Shadowrun feel.

AH! Wak pulled out the Trolling Japanese girls (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Here's my addition to that genre!

It's a little lame but this song sums up what I feel the essence of what Shadowrun is for me.

This song has been stuck in my head for months now.

A little club-y but works in the right situations.

Yeah, its Ohgr and I know that is a little hit or miss but this is good.

A little cheesy but its a damn good song.

Okay let's pull out some obscure stuff now that I've gotten the obligatory industrial/techno out there.

Foetus is seriously some of the best stuff for atmospheric and apocalyptic feeling stuff IMHO.

This isn't safe for work. But yeah. Good stuff.

Fair warning this is odd.

A little less weird.

Oh yeah. I just linked Portishead.

And I'm thoroughly ashamed that I'm linking dubstep, but this is a good remix.

Orksploitation? I tend to think so.

I've linked enough I think. Clearly I'm kind of a music nerd. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

That's funny. I had visions of an orksploitation group called O.W.A. coming Straight Outta El Infernio. That would be epic win.

All right, if we're gonna just start pulling out Youtube links...

I really can't believe no one threw this one out there. Though this one beats it out by only just a little. Hell, Yoko Kanno really is that amazing ("I know.")

Don't know why, but this song always makes me think of the end of Johnny Mnemonic.

I love Daft Punk. Pretty much the whole of the Tron soundtrack is great, but you can't argue with classics - and remixes of classics.

This one was going to be the inspiration for a Missions adventure I was going to submit a few years back, using Dissonant Technomancers.

Gotta go with some Rob Zombie. That whole album was pretty good, but this song in particular.

How about Skrillex?

Ghostly, but amazing.

And this song has been stuck in my head.

On Orxploitation -

One of the things I've always found kind of disappointing about Orxploitation is that, with a name like that, it sounds like it's supposed to be a throwback to the blaxploitation vibe of the 70s. Which is cool! Some really good things came out of that!

But it seems like they've really just gone with "eh, it's ork rap." Which is disappointing!

I've always seen Orxploitation as something that's become sort of a cultural root for orks - a cultural touchstone that a whole generation of orks are now experimenting with, evolving from, or running away from.

So on that note, I've always seen Orxploitation as being a wide range of "cultural" music for SR - for example:

The angry young revolutionists.

The experimenters.

Bad orks done good.

Yeah yeah, call me Michael Bolton already.

Seriously? No Orksploitation love?

And no offense Ravensmuse but you need some better rap taste ;P

Here's some things that are much better than you linked.

Here's your Ork Posers. Here's another poser that samples The Cure.

And also the most epic Ork posers ever. I wanna be them.

QUOTE (tehana @ Jan 5 2012, 03:23 AM) *

Maybe we should be careful in this thread about putting down other people's choices, even in jest? It's the sort of thing that could easily get taken personally.

That aside, I do think hip-hop provides a window into many of the issues - crime, overpopulation, drugs, exploitation - that would also be major concerns in Shadowrun. You can't understand life in the Barrens until you understand - really understand - life in the Projects, or the inner cities. And hip-hop can be that window [although sometimes the glass is dark]. I'd really like to post some of the songs I think epitomize that relationship, some of them even from some of the same artists tehana's mentioned, but I'm often not motivated enough to eat food, so we'll see how that goes.

Our GM usually uses Johnny Cash or Film-music fron Ennio Morricone (yes, the guy that made the songs for "once upon a time in the west"). Because the GM has the right to choose the music, i now hate Johnny Cash, but it doesn´t force me to overtake his job, so it is still fine. ^^

Yeah... If we weren't fighting about music something would be severely wrong (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) In all reality, I'd never say that to someone besides him. I shouldn't have gotten so snarky!

And to keep on topic, here's a good song if your guy's ever picking up chicks in game!

I've been using This Playlist recently for my techno-spy runner. Its equal parts background electronica, mood music, gritty or punky songs, and things you might want to play during boss fights.

Enjoy.

Very cool. Being a long time fantasy gamer, I'm trying to collect a lot of music to run with in a new SR game. This gives me a great starting point, thanks.

It would be great if more people shared any Youtube Playlists.
