The issues I have is that this law will extend beyond the USA, and yet the people that it will affect have no say in it at all!

That happens rather a lot, actually, particularly with intellectual property crimes, but also others. And not just US law, but many other nations'. But this is a particularly obvious and egregious example of it, I agree.

I really don't have much to add that hasn't already been said on the topic of SOPA being Bad News, I do have something else that's tangentially related, and also really ironic: that the right hand of the US government is trying to pass things like SOPA, while the left hand, apparently not paying attention, is trying to build the "Internet In A Suitcase", suitable for delivery to dissidents in countries that have oppressive regimes. (And the real kicker is where they're fieldtesting the hardware: Occupy Wall Street.)

Of course not! The Department of Defense will ask all of the recipients to give their solemn word that they would never sell these things to US citizens!

..yeah, I couldn't write that with a straight face, either. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/silly.gif)

Why am I reminded of Canadian Bacon with the Defense Plant selling Surface-To-Air Missile Launchers at auction for a hundred bucks?

Just throwing my two cents into this discussion, this is for the people who are afraid Obama is going to sign this into law.

IIRC, he's said the same thing before yet still signed things into law. I wonder if he's really his own man at times. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/frown.gif)

Unfortunately, both of my state's Senators - Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, are not only for it, they're co-sponsors! Wasted phone calls there. Dear gods, these 2 twits are not only out of touch with their voters, but apparently out of touch with reality as well.

Alternately, they've just cashed their checks from the RIAA, etc. and are doing what they're told. How very Sixth World...

Like I said, how much for US Congress stock?

Let me translate:
"Congress, make some changes so that we (the democrats) don't get clobbered in the next election. I don't care if it really addresses the oppenents of the laws issues. Then I'll sign it. "

I have some very pointed opinions on various politicians, including the executive branch, but I would ask that we keep the thread to the bills else we totally butcher the TOS. Then I'd have to suspend myself and I wouldn't like that. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

The problem with such laws, which most people do not get, is not that they are problematic for the user in general.
It is a major problem for people who provide services, like dumpshock.

And it does not help to say, that there is nobody accusing you, so you may break the law.

It is not that somebody here posts stuff, which might upset the makers of shadowrun (whoever this will be at this point in the futur). If there is any copyright violation, which upsets anybody, the guy running this side may get legal problems. And then every copyright violation might be revisited and draged into the process.
And this might just be guy looking for chances to sue other people. ( A link to a webside which is felt to be "not good" is enough)
Can you, as a person or as a company, take such risks?

It is like cooling your nuclear reactor with gasoline. Can blow all the time.

Also, ANYONE apparently can make the accusation, and the site's shut down.

We piss off someone on the site, anywhere, and he calls in the Matrix-Orbital Crowbar Cannon and nukes the site from orbit until the Admins here can go through the LEGAL PROCEEDINGS of going, "Hey, dudes, we got permission from the company to operate under fair use with the disclaimer their legal department provides!" (Literally, the Shadowrun main website has a legal page at the bottom where you can copy/paste at the bottom of your webpages to make it legal to use their work as long as you don't claim their stuff as your own.).

Plus the national laws. We've got DAVDSI and LOPPSI in France which aren't that far away from SOPA & PIPA (and will probably get worse with ACTA on top)

For those who haven't heard, Congress apparently spend some of their money on a Huge Clue. SOPA and PIPA both have been suspended pending further considerations. Looks like the blackout actually had an impact. In a 24 hour period, there was a near complete reversal of support going from 80+ supporters in the house to over 100 opposers in the house. Now we just need to keep up the pressure in the event they start to swing back around.

Delayed, not dead. We need to kill this thing. Nuke it from orbit, only way to be sure.

The human deaths will be acceptable collateral losses.
