Interview on this week's Fresh Air.
http://www.npr.org/2012/03/12/148293470/dr...at-can-they-see We're going to start seeing public (i.e. governmental) drones in April, and civilian (i.e. corporate) drones in 2015. |

Cheaper and greener than helicopters. And the cops don't cry as much when you shoot one down, as you haven't killed anyone. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nyahnyah.gif)

Most things listed in that article will not be using the drone they showed in the picture. Also, drones are already being used as they describe.

But only in a limited capacity, as there are no FAA regulations regarding unmanned aircraft. As for the picture, I think that's a case of someone going "NED PICTUR OF DRONE." |

Yeah, last thing we need is a News Chopper being brought down because a drone wasn't transmitting an IFF signal. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nyahnyah.gif)

So that's how St. Nick does it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
Shooting down the drone might not kill anyone, but the flaming bits to the head might. |

Um, without regulations that means in any capacity people can think of... Having restrictions upon behavior does not increase the capacity of use. |

Um, without regulations that means in any capacity people can think of... Having restrictions upon behavior does not increase the capacity of use. Current regulations are "none" as you may not fly any aircraft below a certain altitude. Toy planes being an exception: QUOTE Recreational use of the National Airspace System is covered by FAA Advisory Circular (AC) 91-57 which generally limits operations to below 400 feet above ground level and away from airports and air traffic. General height restrictions: QUOTE Except when necessary for takeoff or landing, no person may operate an aircraft below the following altitudes:
(a) Anywhere. An altitude allowing, if a power unit fails, an emergency landing without undue hazard to persons or property on the surface. (b) Over congested areas. Over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement, or over any open air assembly of persons, an altitude of 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2,000 feet of the aircraft. © Over other than congested areas. An altitude of 500 feet above the surface, except over open water or sparsely populated areas. In those cases, the aircraft may not be operated closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure. (d) Helicopters, powered parachutes, and weight-shift-control aircraft. If the operation is conducted without hazard to persons or property on the surface— (1) A helicopter may be operated at less than the minimums prescribed in paragraph (b) or © of this section, provided each person operating the helicopter complies with any routes or altitudes specifically prescribed for helicopters by the FAA; and (2) A powered parachute or weight-shift-control aircraft may be operated at less than the minimums prescribed in paragraph © of this section. |
