I think he was assuming that they have unspent Edge of 9 and Banishing Resistance gives another 9 for 18 total, which I believe to be incorrect (although I can see where he got that).

Having to reduce 9 is still not 18 hits. Where are you getting that? How are you doubling it? Those rules you provided above: the one is an excerpt of the other. Banishing Resistance is the rule and Banishing a Free Spirit explains it a little further - they are not two separate rules that stack. Unfortunatly you are not correct. Reread them closely. It says you can bannish freespirits but that they have the resistance. Than it explains how the spirit can be bannished. It just mentioned the resistance (probably hinting that it is a bad idea). Most of the stuff written there would be a direct contradiction of the bannishment resistance. (Unless you say, that free Spirits regain edge every sunrise and sunset. So twice every day. (Which would be horribly overpowered.) |

I guess you are the one who is reading the rules text wrong.

I w as referring to "you need 18 hits to banish a force 9 spirit"... but then I noticed
QUOTE I think he was assuming that they have unspent Edge of 9 and Banishing Resistance gives another 9 for 18 total, which I believe to be incorrect (although I can see where he got that). = d'oh on my part!

Again, while I see how he came up with that I am not convinced it is so. It looks to me like a further discussion of the Banishment Resistance Power in a different section, although I can see how it may simply be a more difficult ruling. My inner Rules-Lawyer is trying to agree with Irion, but the rest of me is resisting it for some reason. |

It is maximum silly, but it is what the text says.
But if you look how silly the free spirits rules in general are... The point is, it does not make sense otherwise. Why give free spirits this power, if they actually do not have it? Don't give it to them and write the same section. What would have been the problem? |

Yes, the different statements of the Banishing Resistance Power are indeed confusing, even contradictory. The detailed description of how that Power affects Free Spirits on page 109 of Street Magic qualifies the general description of the Power on page 99 of Street Magic. Using that qualification, which equates unused Edge points with pseudo-services, this example is how I play Free Spirits:
My Free Spirit Aztec Tradition PC Cactihuatzi (look it up in your Nahuatl/English dictionary) Has Edge 8. After using 7 points of Edge to blow away the opposition in the "boss fight", it has 1 point of unused Edge. At the beginning of the run, an opposing mage would have had to Banish with 8 net hits in order to send Cactihuatzi back to its home plane. Currently an opposing mage would only need 1 net hit to send Cactihuatzi packing. |

@pbangarth
The problem is, that it would make the edge of free spirits refresh twice a day. (If you consider both descriptions true...) If the "services" gained by the bannishment resistance ARE the edge, those will refresh like it is stated at the description of the bannishment resistance. (Since with no word those rules are replaced...) Beeing easy to bannish (which now would be the case) is one bad thing. Refreshing edge twice a day is a very great thing. |

@Tymeaus Jalynsfein
It is the very fast refreaching of edge. It gives you a lot of edge to play around with, unless you are already refreshing every scene. (Which would make edge quite powerful) |

(Which would make edge quite powerful) Spirits refrehing Edge is not the same as a Character Refreshing Edge, unless the character is a Free Spirit. We do not allow Free Spirit Player Characters, so THAT is not an issue. Free Spirits Refreshing Edge 2x Day means about nothing. How often are you running into that Free Spirit? |

Right, I was thinking about a character... True, Karma gain/edge and mony for NPCs is a "don't care" thing. |

Irion... Why do you assume that a spirit is going to resist the banishment? He gets to go home with no more services owed to the puny human. I would think they would likely assist that process, or at least not resist it. Because a spirit if it were banished could end up trading 1 master for another one as a successful banish can change control of the spirit |

Much like Sub-atomic particles, I believe that they exist somewhere, but I have never actually experienced them. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) Besides, the Spirit can just Spend Edge to Resiste the Re-Summons. Case Closed. |
