Which is 2 at most, I would think. So a decent mage (Magic 3-5, Spellcasting 3-5; total 8.) should just be able to buy the necessary successes, using a Force 2 spell for 1 drain, and 1 combat turn (3 seconds) later fwoosh, lit cigarette. I'm tempted to give my next mage character have ignite just for this reason. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) At most... I would tend to just set OR for Cigarettes/Cigars/Pipe Tobacco at 1, personally. |

I would certainly allow minor effects similar to spells that are known. For example, in the beginnings of learning to cast Ignite or Fireball/bolt/touch, I would imagine the mage only being able to heat small objects up (Ignite) or produce small, candle-like flames (Fire/whatever). And I would allow for 0 Drain. Why? Consider this: Does it take the same amount of energy to heat up a mug of cold coffee and to make a statue burst into flames? From my viewpoint of magic, I say no. It would take considerably less energy to heat up the mug of cold coffee.
However, I can see from another viewpoint that minimum Drain would be 1. Magic might take enough energy at even a base level to potentially harm the caster. Minimum Force for any spell would be 1, with an appropriate DV. I simply disagree with that viewpoint because I do not see progression as a step graph (ceiling or floor mathematical function). I see it more as a linear graph. What I mean to say is that I don't believe that there are set 'levels' of spells. That you go from Force 1 to Force 2 without anything in between. The way it's described in Shadowrun is just to simplify the effects of a spell so we, as gamers, can apply the effects (relatively) quickly and correctly without -too- much thought. I don't imagine that magic in Shadowrun produces amounts of Drain in set degrees of pain/backlash/whatever. I imagine that every mage suffers a different amount of Drain (Drain Value) according to how much 'energy' they put into the spells, even if the energy they put in is considered the same Force. -K. |

Oh come on, guys. I don't like America any more than anyone else, but they're not alone in crappy beer and citizens that purposefully seek it out. Give credit where credit is due, now. I know many British guys that drink Budweiser when they come to the US. Crazy Brits! Supposedly it's actually a good beer in the UK, but I've not cared enough to try it when there. no it's not. it's handegg. In Chinese the name translates as is "olive ball" Hmmm, I should probably post something OT... I think a happy medium for this would have the GM allow the PC to do minor magical effects with known spells for no drain. Let the player think up creative, small, non-game-affecting effects for any spells the character knows. |
