Okay, chances are it's not real yet, but take a good look at this, then tell me you haven't fallen in love. (Vid clip, 56k warning, quicktime format).

That was SWEET!
I couldn't get that URL at the end to work, though. |

That was just odd. Woulda been cooler if it wasn't quite so obvious it was some guy in a suit. But otherwise it was interesting. Might make for a good Ares or Mitsuhama commercial, and thus a set-up for an interesting run. :)

Did the head fins and the shape of that robot's head remind anyone else of Appleseed?

The legs and arms looked rather thin for a suit - there had to be some editing of the actor. |

As I wait for it to load again (crashed 3/4 of the way through the first time) I ponder the possibilities.
1: actor with video editing: possible, toss in a few puppets for some scenes 2: humanoid robot with onboard balance control system: possible, was hideously expensive 10 years ago, but I didn't keep track of the computing power neccessary. Nothing done was beyond what balance control computing was capable of (although it is smaller than the old control systems were). 3: humanoid robot with all control from a human in a movement recorder outfit In what I saw, there weren't any clear indications proving one over the others. I am fairly certain that it was not a threat assessment capable production model. [edit]considering the "vfx" part of the web address and that the base site shows off their special effects accomplishments.... After seeing the site, I am voting option 1 with some forced perspective and careful prop positioning. |

It's a special effects demo on a special effects site. I'm pretty sure it wasn't a real robot. ;)

Absolutely. My guess is that it was just very good cg, but, to be honest, I'm really not sure. Which is, of course, what damn good special effects are all about. That really was excellent. Bonus points for the Tears of the Sun soundtrack. |

It looked like the far away shots really were a guy in a suit and the closeups were CG and a model. Like at the beginning when he's (it's?) in the car.

IIRC from my readings on sensibleerection.com (hehe), this video was made as the debut item for a CI company -- so while there was probably a great deal of motion capture (the recoil effects and other movements looked very realistic), I believe the robot was all CGI. |

It's also got a bit from the BHD soundtrack, right before the first shots are fired. Which is a far bigger bonus. BHD > TotS in every single way. |

I was wondering if I was hearing that bit correctly. Guess so. Did sound a bit like Chant, but I figured it was unlikely they'd use two soundtracks for this, and, hell, there's a lot of similarity between the two. I do agree, though; BHD wins in every possible way (except maybe the inclusion of Bruce Willis' face, which was about half of what TotS was made of). |

Now don't get me wrong, I've got the soundtrack too, and many of the songs are on my regular playlist, but you can tell those tribal athmosphere tunes apart? That's hardcore, man. If you're that into the movie, you seriously need to read the book. :) |

Why, now that you mention it, a copy is sitting on my desk to my left, next to a mug of tea. Guess I'd better get going. |

Damn. The bad thing about having read it a dozen times is that there's nothing to look forward to in life anymore.
We need a :jealous: smiley, too. |

After watching it a couple times, I have to say I'm 90% sure it's CGI. Some of the movements and colorings were just a little... off. Don't get me wrong, for CGI it was absolutely incredible and blows away anything I've ever seen, and mucho credit for having to make me watch it twice to even catch a few things.
The main problem is CGI put over real life, and most importantly, in sunlight. From what I've observed, most CGI is done with dark colors, I don't know why, but I think I see why in this video. Digital colors and textures become a little more apparent to see against a backdrop of sunlight-illuminated areas. But yeah, CGI and maybe some animatronics for the close-up sequences. |
