Okay, here's a fun topic. I'm trying to figure out what the traits of an Ares Alpha Combat Gun (with rangefinder and grenade link) are. The user of the weapon has cyber vision mag 3, just to add more spice.
The base TNs for an underbarrel grenade launcher are: 4/5/8/9 3d6 scatter Okay, because the gun is fitted for smartlink-2, the TNs are: 3/4/7/8 3d6 scatter Now come the fun questions. The rangefinder + grenade link reduces the scatter to 1d6 automaticly, but does it also affect the long range TNs? Would the TNs become: 3/4/6/6? Finally, if the person firing decided to use his vision mag instead of smartlink, would the grenade scatter be 1d6 or 3d6 (since the grenade link seems to do the air timing on its own)? Best case: 3/4/4/4 1d6 scatter Worst case: 3/4/7/8 1d6 scatter or 3/4/4/4 3d6 scatter |

According to the ranged TN table in the back of CC (would be page 127 were it numbered) they have an entry for all that.
An Ares Alpha Grenade Launcher with the rangefinder and grenade link lists as: Rifle tns w/ smartlink etc: 2/3/3/5 Rifle tns w/ vision mag: 4/4/4/4 Grenade tns w/ smartlink etc: 2/3/5/5 and 1d6 scatter Grenade tns w/ vision mag: 4/4/4/4 and 3d6 scatter They do note the only modifier for indirect fire is the -1 for grenades, but seem to apply everything normally for direct fire. Makes you go hmmmm. |

The reason I ask the question is that smartlinks work slightly differently for underbarrel weapons (applying a -1 instead of a -2 for instance). The TNs would really be 3/4/6/6, it seems.

But why could you not air time the grenade when using Vision mag???

I'm also wondering this. The rangefinder + grenadelink together appear to offer the necessary data pathway to do this. If you're not taking the targeting bonuses from the smartlink, can you also not take the rangefinder's side benefit? |

Oh I know and agree Tinker, about the SL issue. Which is why I found it all the more strange that the table didnt reflect that. As far as air-timing grenades, if youre using vision mag youre not using smartlink, which means youre probably not using the rangefinder or grenade link either. Which would mean that the ballistics computer may not have the right sighting to use that feature. Doesnt mean you couldnt apply it, just that my off the cuff ruling would be against it. Theres no other situation where you can benefit from a SL in conjunction with vision mag, and seems strange to make one here. So in total it seems youre at 3/4/6/6 1d6 scatter or 4/4/4/4 3d6 scatter, the way Id call it. Just funny that the table is wrong.
