The single largest modifier to the relationship between two cultures is religion. If one can found one of the religions early, and spread it to neighbours through missionaries, it can save a lot of grief later.

No, no. There are lots of ways religion affects the game. I was just following up my last post and explaining how it might affect the way neighbours feel about you.
Over powered? We'll, if you want to represent the effects of religion in the real world, then, no. For most of human history, religion permeated just about every aspect of society. |

In Civ5, getting your religious choices first is more or less the way to go to easy mode.

All HAIL BOB!!
A prophet appeared and swayed the majority of the local populace to Zorastrracism. An inscrutable religion, not well suited to the leadership of the Ottoman empire. A local scout unit was sent to talk to the prophet and encourage him to leave the lands of the Ottomans. The arrogant prophet refused and then insulted one of the chaplains of Bob's way in the local scout garrison. Missionaries came quickly to reteach the locals of Ankara the tenements of the Followers Of Bob, and why it was so important to Ottoman Culture. The crowd cheers.....as the prophet from Persia looses its head (captured and deleted). Unfortunately, this all resulted in war with Persia. Which was bad for Persia as their army would be routed many times over the next couple of decades, and result in the Persians being evicted from their home lands and only retaining a minor city. The Ottomans were completely annoyed at this transgression, as the French started to aggressively colonize the southern border. This delayed that war for well over a century. Religious computer wars anyone? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

11 so far Welcome (IMG:style_emoticons/default/newbie.gif) , I think I have over 1000 hours playing. One thing I did notice is it is way too easy in BNW to get culture and diplomacy victories. That may have to do with my play style more than anything else though. Beyond religion, the caravans and cargo ships are one of the best additions to the game. This really encourages you to have port cities as the ships are much better at commerce than caravans. I build 2 caravans and the rest are cargoships as a result. You max out at 11 or 12 trade routes (9-10 from tech and 2 from wonders). |

The only way i have found to get loads of culture was to play as brazil and have the sacred path faith thingie in a lucky spawn . .
because that's basically 2 culture per hex around your city untill the 3 distance is reached. but culture victory is so easy to counter by just going to war usually. the diplomacy, yeah. get the forbidden palace, get the world religion and maybe world ideology going and just fill out the patronacy tree. basically done. |
