Horrido and good morning to everybody. I have a question I hope you can help me with: Is there any mentioning in the SR5 core book, that states how mystic adepts can get more adept power-points after chargen? Adepts are easy because they get a point with every raise of the magic attribute OR if they skip a metatechnique, but I haven’t seen any costs for mystic adepts. It is specifically stated that they don’t get one free at the raise of magic, and I assume that the skip of the metatechnique would work the same as for common adepts. But what about separate raises? What do they cost? And more important: where in the book can I find the corresponding rule?

Thank you in advance for your help.

If Mystic Adepts initiate they can choose a Powerpoint instead of a Meta Technik.
Thats the only way for M A to get more powerpoints (Source Germnan BBB)

You have found it already. You just need to put the pieces together. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Adepts: Gain a free PP whenever they raise Magic. Gain a PP when they forfeit a Metamagic technique, when initiatiting.

Mystic Adepts: Same as Adepts, but gain no free PP when they raise Magic.

It is debatable, whether they can buy a PP for Karma (same as during CharGen), when they raise Magic (they only do not get one for free, after all).

Bye

As a Mystic Adept, all your Magic functions exactly the same. Yo decide whether you want to put that point of Magic towards Adept abilities or Magician spellcasting. Adepts "get a free PP when raising their Magic" because it really doesn't do anything for them but that - give them PP. As a Mystic Adept, every time you raise your Magic rating you decide with that new point whether you're putting it toward Adept abilities and getting a new PP to spend or you're putting it toward Magician spellcasting proficiency.

Additionally, when you take metamagic techniques, you have all the options for Adepts and Magicians available to you, so if your GM allows you to take a PP instead of a technique, then a Mystic Adept can do that as well.

I didn't think it was that confusing.

Do you possibly mix up SR4 with SR5? I think the rule is simply missing. It makes no sense that there are values that cannot be enhanced after chargen by the expediture of karma. Getting adept powers through the skipping of a metatechnique is intended to be an option (especially because adepts only have access to a limited amount of techniques) and not the only way.

No, it's part of the problems with SR5. And don't expect to see any official errata for a while outside of the missions stuff.

By strict RAW in SR5... the mystic adept is both a mage and an adept.
So it gets both the power point and the point of magic.
It still has the option of another PP instead of a metamagic.
This is the strict RAW which of course includes the 2karma per PP in chargen.
Editorialize: which quickly demonstrates how much on crack the current crop of writers and playtesters are :(.

The 'hot-patch' errata for SR Missions... changed this to
5 karma per PP in chargen only.
You can only get more PP by initiating instead of a metamagic.

So that's the long and short of it... it depends on which rules set you're using and if your group is using the missions official fixes. The german official rules have a bunch of stuff errataed in them... but they don't match the english version of the game.

My suggestion is at the least to simply use the Missions Hot-patch rules.

It does make sense, if you look at it from the point of view of balancing how much a Mystic Adept gets from initiating compared to other Awakened options. Mystic Adepts already get a big boost compared to Adepts from increasing their Magic scores in that their Magician skills get that much better. If they could increase their Adept powers in addition for a mere 5 Karma (without having to give up something else, i.e. a metamagic by RAW), their power gain from Karma would outstrip even "standard" Awakened.

Just be warned that if you use the hotpatch rules, any Mystic Adept must start play with 6 Magic and 6 PP or be at a permanent disadvantage, as there is no way to buy the missing PP otherwise.

Eg start play at magic=3 & PP=2, after a few runs raise magic to 6 (no initiation necessary). PP still cannot be raised past 2 if using the hotpatch.

This is what i am talking about. It is RAW (i know, because i really looked into it carefully), but i cannot imagine that this was the original intention.

Again I would say hopefully the forthcoming magic book will clear up a lot of this, but of course the ETA on that is still up in the air.

I was sarcastic about chances of any sort of errata on this muddle.

Sourcebooks are still a (faint) hope. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/nyahnyah.gif)

Didn't see the SR5 tag. Yet another reason why I still haven't looked through the book, despite the fact I got the core rulebook for Christmas.

I think the german rules make the most sense. Making Mystic adepts pick between metamagic and powerpoints pushes them back down the generalist path again which is where they're supposed to be.

Personally I'd probably rule that you can purchase powerpoints up to magic 6 for 5 karma each so people don't feel the imperative to frontload their magic so much as character generation.

I overflew the german core-book on the weekened and i noticed a lot of mistakes in it. So even this version is not free of being errated (e.g. no water-spirit because the use the headline "spirit of human" twice, or mentioning of background count but not explaining it). I think we will have to wait for upcoming books.
