So, how big is a monofilament whip,
Can you, like Johnny Mnemonic, have a fingertip compartment with a monofilament whip in it?
BTW, I have never had a character in any edition use a monofilament whip but was in the library and saw a book with Gibson's name on it and it got me to wondering about his character and whether you could emulate him in SR5.

SR5 p455

QUOTE
One popular trick is to use a fingertip compartment to hold a monofilament whip (p. 422), with the fingertip acting as control weight. Extending a monofilament whip from a fingertip compartment takes a Simple Action, while spooling it back up requires one Complex Action. There’s no telling how many actions it will take for people to stop being impressed at what just came out of your finger.

The fingertip compartment is a very popular storage device for a monofilament whip (p. 315), with the fingertip acting as control weight. Extending a monofilament whip from a fingertip compartment takes one Simple Action, while retracting it requires one Complex Action.

This little trick has been around since almost as long as Johnny Mnemonic.

For a fun debate about trying to replicate the slicing a hole out of a door using the thumb monowhip, like in the movie, you can look here.

tl;dr it can be done, but there are hazards involved as you are basically playing hopscotch with a freaking monowire.

Yes, but the magic of wireless ON has you covered.

QUOTE (SR5 core @ page 423)
Wireless: The whip can be readied with a Free Action,
rather than a Simple Action, and the whip’s built-in safety
system retracts automatically instead of getting you entangled
on a glitch.
The Accuracy is also increased by 2.

So possibly one of the few actually useful wifi bonuses, even if that doesn't make much sense because in actuality if it did loop funny on a glitch, auto retracting may well just as easily put life and limb in the path of a rapid return, but hey....

We may not be adhering to any sensible laws of physics round these parts, but that don't mean you can start being all Logical n' stuff!

At least for 6 years longer than Johnny, actually...

It is also commonly used for the concealment of a monofilament whip, because the replacement joint can serve as the control weight.

The whip from the movie is way strong though, compared to the whip in SR.

You get hit, you die, basically.

You still provided useful information about it being available in SR1 though.
