I haven't played the game yet, just fiddled around making characters, but like SR4, it is fairly easy to make characters who have high dice pools but are not one-trick ponies. Taking a combat adept as an example, A for Attributes, B for adept, C for metatype: human, D for resources, and E for skills - you have a character with high Attributes, a full complement of adept powers, and an Edge of 7. The skills might seem to be the weak spot, 22 points (including the 4 skill points from the adept priority), but that's what the starting Karma is for, to smooth the rough edges - typically, the 22 points go to your specialty skills, and then Karma can be used for all of those rating: 1 to 2 skills to round the character out.
One thing I will give SR5, it is actually pretty well balanced in terms of opportunity costs. Not to say that you can't overgeneralize or overspecialize, or that there aren't some trap options, but overall, being better in one area comes at the cost of another area. If I swapped metatype and resources for the above build, for example, I would have enough money to get used muscle toner: 3 and a reflex recorder (or two). So Edge and Magic would both drop to 5, but I would have 3-4 extra dice for attacks. If I swapped metatype and skills, I would lose that high Edge, but have a lavish assortment of skills for a combat character, maybe even a secondary specialty (such as wheelman). |
