Shouldn't GM Registry go under Runs and Run Ideas?

Can the sub forums' lists go below the main one?

Why give a [IMG]http://invision.dumpshock.com/style_images/2/ds.gif[/IMG] tag if it doesn't work? Or does it?

Can we actually get the recent books in the Recent Books?

Oh, and thanks for the spell checker.

And The Basher lies!

Q1 = Can I make a "personal" skin for this forum?

If [Q1] { Can I get the information on making a skin? }

Else { Can the "New Posts" and "No New Post" icon color be reversed? }

And the fact that I was a week away from hitting my goal of a thousand posts, only to have it snatched out from underneath me like a... like a... like a bear getting thrown because some one pulled the rug out from underneath him. Violently. I really need to focus. And edit better. :d

Lets wait a bit, until most of the users have a chance to look at the new system, and then we'll take into account all the requests.

I completely second getting rid of the nested forums. I feel that the seperate forums for new books was an interesting experiment [one that I supported at first] but I don't think the amount of traffic about recent books has truly been enough to justify individual forums for each of them. I believe that by putting the new release forums even further away from the front page will result in even fewer posts and less utility in each one, not to mention more people being confused about proper placement of posts, and threads being derailed over such ponderings/corrections/etc.

Also, the "Dumpshock Forums" logo should link back to the front page of the forums; currently only the "dumpshock.com" logo does.

I'm not a big fan of the non-underlined "Help/Search/Etc" links; they seem kind of out of place and it's not particularly clear that they are links.

I like the fact that we are no longer forced to preview posts.

Edit: Also, the linespacing is ferking huge.

Anyone else have the problem that no matter how big you make your window, you still have to scroll to see the entire width?

On the reply page I get a full screen of blue to the left of the actual functions...

This seems to be the right thread ...

I'm disappointed ... although I like the looks of this new board, why did you guys have to give up jsp in favour of php?

One of the last bastions has fallen ...

What browser are you using? I can't duplicate this problem with current versions of Mozilla or IE.

You'll still see Java based stuff on Dumpshock.com for certain applications (ie: the ones I write), but we decided on a PHP based board because more of the admins are practiced with it. With the Jive code, I was basically the only one that could do any major work on the backend code, which is why you saw it stagnate for a long time. Hopefully that won't be the case this time since more of us can make things happen with it.

There's nothing wrong with PHP inherently, though there is a mountain of bad PHP code out in the opensource community. I still like Java much more for server side applications, but unless I'm going to spend a lot of time either a) writing a forum package from scratch (that was possibility, BTW) or b) modifying the heck out of a newer Jive release it just wasn't an option to get the feature set that we wanted.

Not to mention the "recent books" are currently State of the Art: 2063, Wake of the Comet and Survival of the Fittest (one out of three, not bad) :D

@ Neuron Basher ...

I sort of expected such an answer. But I still don't like seeing another jsp-based site switching to php.

Maybe I'm just nostalgic there, since my first experience with dynamic web programming was jsp.

And of course I'm bit angry since it's a real pain in the ass to get providers here in Germany that provide jsp support at prices a private person can afford.

Actually, there was very little logic in any of the JSP code in the Jive forums, basically just the skin. All the real work was done by a bunch of Java classes that the JSP called into for it's data. Even if we were to go to a newer version of Jive you'd have lost the JSP pages since they switched to a Webwork based skinning system.

Fear not, Knowbot is Java powered. It may look like it's PHP, but the search engine is entirely coded in Java and the PHP front-end is just connecting to it via SOAP.

Java for web programming is not going anywhere, but JSP isn't the best solution for making pages. PHP isn't either for that matter. Embedding code in the display layer (ie: the view / skins) is just a bad idea on so many levels that many people have switched from JSP to one of the many templating frameworks available. Webwork is my personal favorite, but Struts, Tapestry, Webmacro , and a few others are all very popular as well.

With that said, I'll let everyone get back to their regularly scheduled bitching and complaining. :)

I don't think there's enough contrast between posts, post information, and the next post. Longer threads just blend together. They grey is perhaps a bit too dark overall; each shade should be lightened a bit.

The breadcrumb text appears kind of fuzzy.

The "Dumpshock Forums" logo, the main scheme, and the "Traffic Light" style 'New Post/No New Post' indicators do not follow a consistent UI scheme.

"My Controls" should be next to "My Assistant"; "View New Posts" should be the leftmost option, then "X new messages." Capitalization is inconsistent in that area, also.

Further thoughts: Some sort of horizontal line/stroke between each thread in the thread listings would also be nice. There's a /lot/ of text on those thread listing pages.

I had to re-create my account (Ironically my old account, which I can't use because I don't have the email address it corresponds to, transferred over). Other than that, I'm cool.

Oh yeah. I was trying to forget that you had used that crap for the front-end. I stand corrected. :-P

I am not seeing the little arrow picture that is supposed to be to the left of the links Dumpshock Forums, Administration, Bug Reports & Feature Requests, etc... Up on the left corner of the screen, just under where it says I am logged in. I just get a picture placeholder instead. The properties says it is supposed to be http://invision.dumpshock.com/style_images...eRightArrow.gif
I have the problem whether using IE 5.5 or IE 6.

For some reason, all of the text is every post appears to be in bold in my browser (currently IE 6).

Ah, the all bold text only happens when I use the Invision Power Board skin, rather than the Dumpshock default. I also noticed that some of the emoticons are different between the two. For example, in the Invision skin, there is a little heart to the right of my name, at the top of the first post, of my I Am Still Out thread. In the Dumpshock default, it is the smoking emoticon. Wonky, huh? You can see the same thing with the Football thread.

Edited to add: Well, I changed the post icon to the standard smiley. I am guesing it just uses whichever smiley is in the same position to choose from for either skin. So if you picked the 4th one from the left, top row on Invision, it also displays the 4th one from the left, top row, for people using Dumpshock default.

The fact that the Invision skin was available was not intentional. That skin has been removed and anyone who was set to use it has been switched to the default skin. I apologize that we had to do that, but there are so many modifications to the skin that it's just not feasible for us to support multiple skins.

Please feel free to make suggestions for changes to the default skin, though. We'll consider anything that people suggest, though we may not necessarily act on changes that we don't agree with.

How about getting rid of all this grey in the standard skin then? It is very drab and depressing. I found the Invision colors to be much happier to look at.

I'll see what I can do. It may be possible to make a simple skin that is identical to ths default one with minor color changs, but no promises. I'll do what I can.

Yep. Im using IE 5.2.2 on a G4 Mac and see the same. Also each Signature/last line gets cut except for the last post. :( Besides that the new layout is spiffy.
